The 3rd 7" release of the curious Belgravia Records label from Milan is also the first that would qualify as Proper Metal in my book. The STATION RAIL ROAD and BLACK HOLES singles from the year before both belonged in the very elastic Hard Rock pidgeonhole, the former outside the boundaries of this site, the latter quite good and thus included. NEW AGE on the other hand... yeah, proper NWOIHM alright!
According to Nonseinormale's Guide To Italian Steel, they opened for RAVEN on their Italian '81 tour, and several band members wound up in VANADIUM at a later stage. These trivia actually describes the two sides of this 7" rather well, but is it a good one? Well, here's the thing: the guitar sound is pretty shoddy, and shoddy in an odd way at that.
You know that warbly sound that happens when your ancient tape deck starts dying on you, making terrible noises and plays the tapes just a few % too slow and a bit erratic? This is most likely what must have happened in the studio, becase this is how the guitar-track sounds to me
...or it's just poor mastering, what do I know of studio techniques anyway? Unfortunately this phenomenon is most prominent in the superior B-side. The song itself it quite the little pearl in the NWOHM-approaching-proto-Speed genre, and could have rubbed shoulders with the better JAGUAR, RAVEN, SAVAGE or BERSERKS anthems of the day were it not for this little handicap. Such a shame. While their theme-song on side A does sound a lot better, its boogie-Metal trot won't raise any eyebrows outside the small circle of die-hard VARDIS fans out there. So, a bit hit'n'miss this one...
