In all fairness more of a Metal band by proxy, WAMPYRE SHADOWWOLF remains relevant for inclusion in these archives in more than one regard. The band/project was active in the mid-1990s and consisted of the perenially creative George “Magus Wampyr Daoloth” Zacharopoulos (bass, keyboards – NECROMANTIA, ROTTING CHRIST, THOU ART LORD, etc.), Vasilis “Wolf” Zobolos (guitars – TERRA TENEBRAE, THOU ART LORD, VANITY, etc) and Giorgos “Shadow” Florakis (vocals), 1990s editor of the Greek Metal Hammer magazine who also made some additional guest vocal tracks back in the day for EN-GARDE, N.A.O.S., ROTTING CHRIST etc.
Their one and only official release, 1996’s “Wampyricon” CD – which also happened to be the final recording done at the legendary Storm Studios – contains a mix of Gothic Rock, Darkwave and Ambient music with long instrumental/”atmospheric” passages accompanied by spoken-word vocals. As said above, this is not Metal or even Hard Rock by any definition. Yet, given the members involved and the Storm Studios treatment, the music still carries a quaint resemblance to the contemporary Hellenic Black/Death Metal sound and, quite naturally, The Magus’ additional explorations in Dark Ambient soundscapes.
