Metal Edge

Athens (Attica)
Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Speed Metal
Active:
1990-2009

Formed in 1990 by the guitarist duo Aggelos Kokkorogiannis and Andreas Georgiakomos (also the vocalist), the Athenian heavy/power metal act METAL EDGE belongs to that likable breed of bands who just won’t give up despite apparent obstacles. After sharing the stage with a host of local celebrities (VICE HUMAN, POWER CRUE, PANX ROMANA, etc.) and releasing one decent (“Hell Agency”) and one really good (“Insecure”) demo tape that somehow failed to attract serious label interest, the band finally decided to release their first full-length album themselves in 2001. Entitled “Back from the Edge”, the debut CD contains re-recorded songs from the demo days and is currently available for free at the band’s website (www.metaledge.gr). Following a ten-year hiatus, METAL EGE is back in action since.

Judging by the cover art, “Hell Agency” looks more like something out of 1970s krautrock than the product of a debutant, demo-level heavy metal band. The music, however, is robust heavy metal with an occasional thrashing edge to the riffing. The elephant in the room here is the weak ticking of the programmed drums, which lessens the impact of the otherwise fully acceptable song material.

It doesn’t require more than a few seconds of the blazing instrumental opener – simply titled “Heavy Metal” – to realize that this will be one hell of a ride. Having recruited the drumming talents of Takis Sotiropoulus (credited on “Hell Agency”, but obviously not participating), METAL EDGE takes a decisive step towards a fiercer, but also more diverse heavy/power/speed metal-style on their second demo. Songs range from speed-fests (“Heavy Metal”) over epic numbers (“Judgement Day”) to power ballad-territories (“A Dream Unfolds”). The whole recording sounds completely electrifying, with the band performing at their utmost ability. What might scare away potential listeners are the vocals of Andreas Georgiakomos, which sound quite close to the singing style employed by early-80s, melodic hardcore punk bands. Still it kind of fits METAL EDGE's music in its own honest way and I wouldn't like to see him replaced by a typical HM-wailer.
