GAUDEBEC was a Melodic/Atmospheric Death Metal band from Piraeus who existed between 1994 and 1996, during which time they managed to issue two demo tapes (of which the first still remains to be discovered by us, unfortunately): “Spiritual Decay” (1994) and “Release” (1996). The group included Michael Sirigos (vocals, guitars), Fotis Galanos (vocals, guitars, keyboards), George Smyrnioudis (bass) and Christos Tsavos (drums).
When describing the music on “Release” as melodic, we are not speaking of the typical Gothenburg sound where you’re basically listening to Heavy Metal with death-y vocals. Rather, GAUDEBEC performs in a style which is closer to the old school “atmospheric-gothic” Death Metal of something like early PARADISE LOST, where the lead guitars assume a prominent role in crafting songs with melodic contour. It is a style quite typical of Greek Death Metal, which focus more on submerging the listener in a dark atmosphere than bludgeoning them with brutality. Worth checking out for fans of fellow Hellenic bands such as AIMOPTYSI, DESULPHURIZE, PHLEBOTOMY, etc.
