Not to be mistaken for the Yankee, Chilean or Brazilian bands bearing identical names, Greece’s FUNERAL CHANT was a short-lived Athenian Black Metal act of the late 1990s. Members included Dark Archon aka Porphyrion (vocals – CULT OF EIBON, KAWIR, NERGAL and many more), Lady Death (vocals), Count Magnus (guitars) and Hastaroth (keyboards) – no drummer is mentioned, but it doesn’t really sound like they used a drum machine like so many other Greek bands at the time.
As far as we know, FUNERAL CHANT only released a single two-track demo tape entitled “Entrance to Dimensions Unknown” (1998). The title-track is a pure Ambient/Dungeon Synth affair, whereas the second song, “Wrath of Artemis”, offers atmospheric, vaguely symphonic Black Metal somewhat similar to VORPHALACK and MACABRE OMEN. It’s actually a quite good demo, with “Wrath of Artemis” cycling through a multitude of promising musical ideas, making one wish the band had stayed together a bit longer to expand upon their discography.
