DEVOLUTION was a Thessaloniki-based group formed in September 1990 by Iraklis Tsiftelidis (guitars), Panagiotis Toledos (guitars) and Alexis “Englishman” Karaliotas (drums). Following the additon of vocalist Sotiris Silvestros, DEVOLUTION recorded their one (and only?) demo, simply referred to as “Demo ‘92” (1992) with drums performed by FUNERAL REVOLT’s Dimitris Theodoridis on a session basis. Musically, the band offers a blend of European and North American Thrash- and Power Metal.

Although it appears as if the band had plans to record a second demo, we have no tangible proof of it actually existing. We do know that DEVOLUTION played at least two gigs, of which one was done together with the Greek Hardcore Punk outfit Μάστιγα and another otherwise unknown (to us, at least) band called DIRTY WEAPONS.

This three-track demo offers an admixture of North American and European Thrash Metal. Especially the riffing stands out as a well-balanced blend of SLAYER, DESTRUCTION and the catchier Bay Area-phalange, while the melodic vocals draw exclusively on US Power/Thrash. What further stands out here is the production, or in more precise terms, the raw guitar tone which is electrifyingly great. If only the riffs had more character and memorability, this tape could have been a real bludgeoner.
