DEMOGORGON was an eponymous one-man Black Metal act created by Demogorgon (vocals, all instruments – LEGION OF DOOM, STUTTHOF, ACHERONTAS, SHADOWS OF MAJESTY, WINTERGODS) allegedly as early as 1991. The band debuted in 1993 with the “Satanize Rehearsal” tape – a raw and primitive offering driven forth by a drum machine hyperblasting itself into inertia. However, starting with the second demo “Lycaon Pictus” (1995) and continuing on the band’s final release “The Horned Moon” (unleashed in 1996 on limited edition 7”-vinyl), DEMOGORGON achieved a higher degree of sophistication, while still retaining the feral, unfiltered expression heard on the debut.
Stylistically and in terms of composition, DEMOGORGON bears much semblance to Demogorgon’s output with LEGION OF DOOM, which means it’s closer to Northern European Black Metal than the traditional Hellenic sound. Demogorgon’s creative output remains distinguishable much by grace of his signature riffing-style and way of creating melodies that strike a balance between the sinister and mournful/epic. It should be mentioned as well that both “Lycaon Pictus” and “The Horned Moon” features a substantial amount of Dark Ambient to go with the Black Metal tracks. Not surprisingly perhaps, given Demogorgon’s predilection towards Ambient/Dungeon Synth soundscapes in his other bands/projects.
DEMOGORGON’s demise (the band, that is) remains unclear. Except for 2012’s self-titled compilation containing the “Lycaon Pictus” demo as well as “The Horned Moon” EP, no further works have been presented since 1996. The band has been featured on at least one compilation, the infamous “Black Metal Order” CDr put out by Triskelon in 1999.
For those who enjoy LEGION OF DOOM and haven’t heard DEMOGORGON yet, both the second demo and “The Horned Moon” EP are recommendable. Musically similar, but with a different vibe/atmosphere.
