Clearly influenced by the Swedish Black Metal scene, DEFILER was created in 1999 by the then Kavala-based duo Giorgos Kitis (vocals, drum programming) and Stelios “Sect” Koslidis (guitars – THY FLESH). A five-track demo/EP arrived the year after, bearing the very genre-typical title “Whispers of Eternal Blasphemy” (2000) and featuring the addition of Iraklis Deligiorgis on bass guitar. A typical blast-fest coated with icy tremolo melodies and sinistrous chordings in the vein of DARK FUNERAL, one could easily be tricked into believing this was the product of a Swedish band – if it hadn’t been for the programmed drums and subtle Greek accent on the vocals, that is. Not overly original, but surely competent within the boundaries of the style.
Following a move to Thessaloniki, the band released a follow-up demo 2003 entitled “Expiation in Filth”, which had been recorded the year before in the same Kavala-studio used for “Whispers…”. Stylewise, the music now gravitated closer to technical Death Metal in the MORBID ANGEL vein, while still retaining vestiges of Black Metal in terms of melodic syntax and general atmosphere.
