Rising out of the ashes of the Death Metal act INTHRALL, Athens’ DEEPENED NAIL was formed around 1997-98, originally featuring the same lineup as the preceeding band: Theodore Papachristos (vocals, guitars – INTHRALL), George Psaroudakis (guitars – INTHRALL), George Stavropoulos (bass, ERASE, INTHRALL, STRIKELIGHT) and George Papachristos (drums – INTHRALL). An old biography flyer also lists a second bass guitarist named Achilles Harbilas, while the session bass credits on “Sign of the Times” goes to CELESTIAL SCREAM’s Theodoris Roumeliotis, so there might’ve been some minor lineup changes down the road. Along with the name-change, the quartet also decided a shift in style to something perhaps a bit more – at least at the time – commercially viable, namely groove-oriented Thrash/Heavy Metal with some mild Hardcore influences in the vocal department in particular.
Two demos were recorded in total, entitled “Sign of the Times” (1999/2000?) and “Last Exit Dance” (2000). The first one is arguably a bit rougher and closer to “genuine” Thrash in terms of riff schemes, while the band’s final work focuses more on catchiness. As the name of the band suggests, 1990s METALLICA must’ve been one of the main influences on both recordings.
In addition to the afore-mentioned demo recordings, DEEPENED NAIL made a couple of compilation appearances (including a spot Metal Invader’s widely circulated “Warzone”-series), performed a handful of gigs and also found credit spot in a Cretan short movie production dated 2014. No more signs of activity have been observed from the DEEPENED NAIL camp after the above-mentioned releases, so it seems likely that the band split up sometime in the early 2000s.
