DARK VISION was formed in Piraeus in November 1996, performing keyboard-enhanced and Heavy Metal-ized Black/Death that seems partly derived from the classic Hellenic BM sound. The band was founded by Dimitris Sarmas (vocals), Iasonas (keyboards) and Giannis Konstantakos (drums). The original lineup was later completed with the addition of Takis Foitos (bass – ARPYIAN HORDE, DREAM WEAVER, SOVEREIGN, etc.), Mitzelos (guitars) and Giannis (guitars). We’re not sure if this lineup ever recorded any material though, since both guitarists Mitzelos and Giannis along with the keyboardist Iasonas were soon replaced by a guy named Makis (guitars), while Takis appears to have taken over the keyboardist slot along with his bass duties. To further complicate things, during their early days the members of DARK VISION employed typical Black Metal pseudonyms (Seth, Shaman, Dragonlord, Tyr…)
Now, DARK VISION was quite active in the underground during their first phase (1996-2002) and put out four demo/promo tapes before the eventual release of their debut full-length album “Full Moon Shines” (2002). These pre-album recordings, all featuring very nice artwork, differ somewhat in style and sound from their later output. As mentioned earlier, their early style reminds of the traditional Greek Black Metal sound, although a bit more mellow, melodic and keyboard-centered. A decent example of the band’s early style would be the title-track of their third demo “Nocturnal Prowler” (1998).
Starting with 2002’s “Full Moon Shines” CD, DARK VISION began to gradually adjust their sound, bringing it closer to modern Black/Death, while still retaining some of their original Hellenic roots. A more thorough survey of DARK VISION’s later history is in the making, so stay tuned for further updates!
