Offering an intriguing and mildly progressive blend of classic Heavy Metal and traditional Cretan Folk music, CRETECISM was the brainchild of the Cretan-based (obviously…) multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Giannis Aygoustinakis. A far cry from the insipid so-called Folk Metal that has plauged the world since the early 2000s, CRETECISM’s sole release “Sightless Light” – a two-track EP released on CD – is a thoroughly-composed affair that attempts a genuine adaption of Crete’s rich musical past into the context of Heavy Metal. Of special note is Giannis’ revision of Heavy Metal’s melodic syntax, which is done in a surprisingly tasteful manner and yet without loosing its inherent powerful character.
