CORVUS NEBLUS was a dungeon synth-project courtesy of MACABRE OMEN Alexandros “Evil Dark” Antoniou, active in the late-1990s/early 2000s. Two musically and thematically intertwined cassettes were released in total under the C.N.-moniker – both on cult Estonian label Elven Witchcraft – entitled “Strahd’s Possession” Chapter I (1999) and Chapter II (2001) respectively.
Featuring integrated aesthetics and extensive liner-notes, “Strahd’s Possession” is an ambitious affair, conceptually based on Alexandros character from the old Advanced Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game Ravenloft. A narrative of sorts, with the song titles and liner-notes working as a complementary guide to the story. Stylistically, the music could be described as a blending of Cold Meat Industry-era MORTIIS and BURZUM’s early instrumental pieces (“Tomhet”, “Han Som Reiste”, etc.) The music is quite basic in structure and performance, with each song based on a few basic melodic ideas accompanied by lower register root notes in “darker” timbres. “Chapter II” also introduces some spoken word passages, many of them presumably lifted out of the computer game and others probably done by Alexandros himself.
If you’re into dungeon synth and/or old-fashioned, computer-based RPG’s, this is just a perfect match!
