CELESTIAL SCREAM was a mid-to-late-1990s Athenian act whose hook-ish melodic melange of Metal styles received positive response in fanzines before the band’s folding in the early noughties. Despite competent and accessible song material, they never went beyond demo stage.

In terms of techniques used, “Haec Dies” is indebted to the melodic Death Metal stylings in vogue at the time, complemented by gothic undertones, plenty of keyboards and hints at Black Metal melody. But if we look beyond these surface trappings, there’s a Heavy Metal heart thumping behind the dramatic and expanasive songs and the next hook is never too far away. Maybe this explains how CELESTIAL SCREAM managed to tie all these disparate ends together to make for a relatively easy-to-digest listening experience. On the other hand, the band’s penchant for the sentimental entails “Haec Dies” with an air of guilty pleasure which also lessens the impact of the music. But there’s enough musicality in this short demo tape to make it worth a listen once in a blue moon.

This (officially unreleased?) promo tape gives witness to a different CELESTIAL SCREAM. Although melodic sensibility is kept intact, most of the Gothic romance of 1998’s “Haec Dies” has gone out the window in favor of modern, post-“Slaughter of the Soul” Death/Thrash metal. The aggro-styled vocals and groovy riffing is really not my cup of tea, but at least CELESTIAL SCREAM does a better job at it than the majority bands working within a similar framework.
