(Writer’s note: I know that many would consider it crazy, or even heretical to include so many punk-affiliated bands in an archive dedicated to the documentation of Hellenic metal music. But ignoring this vibrant and still vital part the Greek underground music scene would mean not only missing out on a lot of fantastic and powerful music, it would also be to neglect the integral connection between the two genres in the country. Many punk bands shared with their metallic counterparts a deep appreciation for classic metal bands such as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER and last but not least, HELLHAMMER – something which is more often than not reflected in the music as well. So, if you dare, do yourself a favor and check out some of the Greek punk groups mentioned in these pages. You won’t regret it.)
BIRTHWARD started their musical endeavor all the way back in 1982, then under the name BIRTH WARD ’82 and featuring in its ranks Christos Tsiogas (vocals), Manolis Salivaras (guitars), Vassilis Margiolis (bass) and George Salivaras (drums). In late 1982, they wrote themselves into
Greek music history by recording and releasing the 7” EP “Fireworks” (1982) – the first Greek Punk record with lyrics in English. Allegedly, before their first splitting up in 1988, they did some sporadic gigs and also produced one independently released LP (“The Greatest War”) as well as two additional 7”es (although none of the latter have been actually confirmed to exist as of yet!).
Their journey into Metallic realms begun in 1995, when the band reformed as a trio with the shortened name BIRTHWARD. Except for the singer Christos, who had left the band, the original lineup was kept intact, with bassist Vassilis/Bill taking over the vocal duties. The first result of this slightly unexpected comeback was the “Blown Out Morbid Date” (1995) Mini-LP, self-released on 45rpm 12” Vinyl. Stylistically, it stands in stark contrast to their early forays into Hardcore Punk. Instead, we are offered PRONG-styled, D-beat-based and groovy Crossover/Hardcore/Thrash with riot-shouted choruses and Heavy Metal-styled lead guitars. The groove-ish tendencies were furthered embraced on their final release to date, 2000’s “Infected Life” CD.
