(Writer’s note: I know that many would consider it crazy, or even heretical to include so many Punk-affiliated bands in an archive dedicated to the documentation of Hellenic Metal music. But ignoring this vibrant and still vital part the Greek underground music scene would mean not only missing out on a lot of fantastic and powerful music, it would also be to neglect the integral connection between the two genres in the country. Many Punk bands shared with their metallic counterparts a deep appreciation for classic Metal bands such as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER and last but not least, HELLHAMMER – something which is more often than not reflected in the music as well. So, if you dare, do yourself a favor and check out some of the Greek Punk groups mentioned in these pages. You won’t regret it.)
One of the best-kept secrets of the Greek Punk movement, Ατομική Σχάση (“Nuclear Fission”) left us with only one tape release in 1995 before dropping off the radar. But what a release! Extremely heavy yet melodic and definitely Metal-influenced Crust Punk, draped in apocalyptic atmosphere in the vein of classic UK acts such as AMEBIX, AXEGRINDER and HELLBASTARD. Like many of the great Hellenic Crust groups, Ατομική Σχάση also knew how to employ keyboards as an enhancer of atmosphere, adding a sense of sublime majesty to the compositions somewhat similar to the country’s contemporary Black Metal bands.
Whatever information we have is mostly taken from the tape credits. The band was allegedly formed in Athens 1993 and did some gigging in the localities such as the Villa Amalias squat. “Ακροβάτες Στο Κενό” (“Acrobats in the Void”) was released privately on tape in 1995, with the following members participating: Kostas (guitars, vocals), Petros (guitars, vocals), Haris (bass, vocals) and Christos (drums).
