Anthropinos Lithargos (Ανθρώπινος Λήθαργος)

(Writer’s note: I know that many would consider it crazy, or even heretical to include so many Punk-affiliated bands in an archive dedicated to the documentation of Hellenic Metal music. But ignoring this vibrant and still vital part the Greek underground music scene would mean not only missing out on a lot of fantastic and powerful music, it would also be to neglect the integral connection between the two genres in the country. Many Punk bands shared with their metallic counterparts a deep appreciation for classic Metal bands such as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER and last but not least, HELLHAMMER – something which is more often than not reflected in the music as well. So, if you dare, do yourself a favor and check out some of the Greek Punk groups mentioned in these pages. You won’t regret it.)

Ανθρώπινος Λήθαργος (”Human Lethargy”) was formed in 1991 and consisted of Sakis Babatsis (vocals – INDUSTRIAL SUICIDE), Thanasis (guitars), Thanos Georgilas (bass – PANIKOS) and Vangelis Petropoulos (drums – ANABIOSIS, BENT BY SORROW). Their music followed in the classic Greek/Athenian tradition of heavy, apocalyptic crust punk with plenty of metallic riffing to warrant inclusion in these archives.

Their one and only rehearsal demo came out on tape in 1992 (habitually referred to as “Demo 1992”) and features similar artwork as used by Sakis’ other band Βιομηχανική Αυτοκτονία (“Industrial Suicide”) – another Greek punk band worth checking out. They also participated in a handful of domestic compilations in the 1990s.

In 2020, the Greek underground label Extreme Earslaughter issued a compilation on tape featuring the previously mentioned “Demo 1992” as well as a 1991 live recording from Villa Amalias.
