Although their name and logo suggest Black Metal, this Ioanninan band played Progressive Heavy Metal. AENGON was founded around 1995 and after several membership rotations they recorded their first self-titled demo tape in 1998. At the time, the band consisted of guitarist founding member Giannis Tsounamis (vocals), Kostas Kalambokas (guitars – DEATHCRAEFT), Thomas Mitsis (bass) along with session musician Kostas Tzokas (drums).
For fans of quirky, semi-progressive Heavy Metal, AENGON’s self-titled demo debut is well-worth checking out; with the rather strange, narrative-driven mini-epic “Divine Song” as its centerpiece. Old fanzine reviews generally describe the music in favorable words, except for reservations related to sound quality. AENGON played a handful of gigs in their hometown with good results and plans were made to re-record the demo songs along with new material using better equipment, as well as changing their logo to avoid any confusion as to their genre belonging. As far as we know, these recordings either never took place or weren’t widely circulated and band activities were eventually terminated.
Guitarist Kostas Kalambokas remains musically active in the Death/Thrash act DEATHCRAEFT and also runs “Infinite Loops Studios” in Ioannina.
