Absence of Dawn

Argos (Peloponnese)
Doom Metal, Death Metal
Active:
1992-1999

Hailing from the beautiful and incredibly old city of Argos (Peloponnese), Death/Doom act ABSENCE OF DAWN began activities in 1992. During it’s seven years of existence, the band managed to keep together with the same core line-up which was: Iraklis Sourous (vocals, lyrics), Nikolas “Nick” Katsoulieris (guitars, composition), Dimitris Karoutis (bass) and Stathis Karoutis (drums).

Their debut demo cassette entitled “And the Sun Is Fading” (1996) was recorded in August 1996 at Zenetzis Studios (Athens). It was actually not until this point in time that they settled with their band name, having employed several different monikers earlier on. The tape, released a few months later, showed ambition; being released on pro-printed cassette and with excellent packaging. Yet somehow it failed to stir the pot, most surely because of non-existent promotion.

In the beginning of 1998, the band recruited John Kozanidis as a second guitarist prior to the recording of the second tape. The recordings were completed one year after the debut, in August 1998; this time in another Athenian recording facility called Voices Studio. “Promo 1998” contained two new tracks and was mainly intended for promotional purposes (which didn’t really happen!)

Staying true to their schedule, the first (and only) ABSENCE OF DAWN live performance took place one year later in August 1999 at their hometown of Argos. The set list consisted of eight original songs in total, which included the complete demo material plus two newly composed songs (one of which was an instrumental). The latter two songs would never be put to tape however, as this concert was sadly enough the last sign of life from the band.

On their debut tape, ABSENCE OF DAWN attempts an atmospheric take on “Gothic”-era PARADISE LOST. The fundamentals are similar, with songs built around riff-pairs (verse/chorus) interlaced with solemn lead guitar and sullen vocal lines – all set in motion by a mid-tempo 4/4 back-beat. It’s a sparse environment – even more so than the Brits’ – to the point of becoming hypnotic. That is not to say that the music lacks dynamics. ABSENCE OF DAWN knows when it’s time to move on, preferably by introducing a third contrasting riff that brings the song to a proper climax.

Perhaps more important though is the band’s penchant for creating a thick, solemn atmosphere that somehow manage to come off as both depressing and uplifting at the same time. This could be explained by the way of melody, or rather the interplay between the trudging, palm-muted riffs vis-à-vis the lyrical bursts of emotion provided by the lead guitar. Another factor that comes into play here is the muddy, low-budget production. Many would probably disagree on this issue but the accompanying texture of noise, distortion and tape-hiss works its own kind of magic on the material. Just like old photographs owe part of their character to age and “inferior” technical circumstances.

There are things that could have been improved or done differently, but that would probably only lessen the charm of the recording. So, to those who allow themselves to be swept away this kind of music, “And the Sun Is Fading” is indeed a pleasant rainy-day companion.
