(Writer’s note: I know that many would consider it crazy, or even heretical to include so many Punk-affiliated bands in an archive dedicated to the documentation of Hellenic Metal music. But ignoring this vibrant and still vital part the Greek underground music scene would mean not only missing out on a lot of fantastic and powerful music, it would also be to neglect the integral connection between the two genres in the country. Many Punk bands shared with their metallic counterparts a deep appreciation for classic Metal bands such as BLACK SABBATH, MOTÖRHEAD, SLAYER and last but not least, HELLHAMMER – something which is more often than not reflected in the music as well. So, if you dare, do yourself a favor and check out some of the Greek Punk groups mentioned in these pages. You won’t regret it.)
Άρνηση (“refusal”) was a Thessaloniki-based Hardcore/Crust/Grindcore outfit formed in 1987. In addition to a handful of compilation appearances, they released one demo tape entitled “Το Ψωμί Να Βγαίνει” (1988). But what a demo… a veritable whirlwind of irreverent Thrash-Punk, often reaching Grindcore-levels of intensity. Gruff Proto-DM vocals, deliberately careless high-velocity riffs and surprisingly catchy (and well-played) basslines – all set to a rhythmic backdrop shifting between skanks, assertive D-beats and straight-ahead blasting.
Definitely one of the more violent bands of the country during the late-1980s (at least musically speaking), relatable to contemporary ROTTING CHRIST during their Grindcore-days. Despite the sonic onslaught on display, Άρνηση still manages to emit a light-hearted “fuck off we’re all going to hell anyway” attitude, which very much works to their advantage, culminating in the rancid live rendition of VENOM’s “In League with Satan”. A very charming and ahead-of-the-pack band that offers a glimpse into the growing-ground for Greek Grindcore/Death Metal.
An original copy of “Το Ψωμί Να Βγαίνει” is more or less impossible to find these days. Thankfully, the demo was reissued in 2018 as a joint effort between Greek underground labels Extreme Earslaughter and Septic Aroma of Reeking Stench in a limited run of 100 copies.
