HM Artwork ripped from comics/RPGs

So I recently got obsessed with proving that Sodom's "Witching Metal" was based on the early Conan comics (especially when I read that Angelripper took full credit for it haha). Ended up reading through something like 70+ issues...and it often was so damn close...

...so close...

...still not enough...

Until finally, Conan #30 "The Devil Beasts of Nergal" illustrated by James Buscema:

BINGO! Tom you forgot the Sword sheath!

This made me want to set up some sort of list or index of the origins of album artwork "borrowed" from comics (Living Death's Vengeance From Hell/Worlds Neuroses are of course traced from Phillip Druillet's "Lone Sloane") or role playing games (like Burzum/Necromantia tracing aDnD covers). I remember artist Dennis Dread put out a few blogposts a few years back tracing (hah) the origins of quite a few iconic pieces https://dennisdread.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... y_896.html. I've always gotten a great excitement out of seeing an iconic cover in the wild so I'd love for there to be a list where you could look that up. Plus, I think credit is due where it is due of course, like who cares for something like the Sodom cover but the fact that somebody charged money and took credit for the "drawing" on "Power From Hell" or "Hell Awaits" is pretty lame!

Ideally this should be something like the gorgeous "features" of The Corroseum but with my limited time and coding skills I'll probably settle for a RYM-list hah.
Do you have an example of this? Or is there a specific cover you have a hunch is "borrowed"? Put up a bounty! Me I'm searching for the origins of the goddamn Amebix axeman...

NWOBHM band Savage from Enfield also used Connan on their flyers

Interesting! :o I'm pretty sure Garry Sharpe-Young who did most of the later Savage artwork got a lot of his designs from the pages of 2000AD etc. Speaking of 2000AD I read through a bunch trying to find other examples: Image Image From Nemesis the Warlock.

Hey Mecha B., cheers for this eye-opener. In my youth I was mainly into comics that artists wouldn't rip off for the sake of heavy metal album covers, so nothing to contribute. You help uncovered very interesting info that don't leave good aftertaste, but yeah, truth should be told and acknowledged. I'd like to witness that for some other areas of mankind endeavor, yet that's whole other story.

It's no biggie really! More of a curiosity for nerds. It's just the few instances were it becomes egregious (like when something blows up to Slayer proportions).

Really good idea for a thread MechaBarbarian. As a big comics guy myself i should reallly have a bunch of examples but i find myself mentally contipated at this precise moment.
Let me have a good long think about it & hopefully loads of examples come flooding back to me.

Angel Dust's To Dust You Will Decay was originally the cover of an issue of Dragon Magazine.

A while back I wrote a series of articles about album covers which had originally appeared on fantasy/horror/sci-fi books. It's not exactly what the OP was talking about, but close enough to be of interest.

@DMR: Yeah there's obviously a difference between a licensed piece of existing artwork and tracing something. Really appreciate you pinpointing the exact origins though! Good stuff
