The other Bay Area

The Massachusetts Bay! I was never a huge fan of the SF Bay area thrash sound, but growing up near Boston the local thrash metal scene had a big impact on me.
Meliah Rage had the most commercial success and while I like them their sound isn’t really typical of the area.
Instead I would argue that
Wargasm were the true kings of the scene and the only other band I know of that actually got signed.
My personal favorite would definitely be
Atomicaust. They got a bit artsy-fartsy in their later years, but their 1989 demo rules. Face… the… Butcher. Butcher! BUTCHERRRRRRR!!!!!!!
Nuclear Assault worshippers
Candy Striper Death Orgy get credit for being the hardest working band on the scene. They filled more opening slots than “TBA”!
Cardinal Sin was another big name, though it says they're from Puerto Rico on their site. Not sure what that’s about – they played Boston and Salisbury all the time and are friends with several other local bands.
Formicide and
Temporary Insanity were also fairly popular locally. There was another band called Spasm that I remember really enjoying, but I can’t seem to find any info on them.
Is anyone else familiar with any of these bands or others from the area?

All on MySpace, proof how usable this site is.
Have heard of all except CSDO and Spasm. I remember a guy who's been offering Formicide demos on his blog. Sadly I didn't dwnld them. I prefer Wargasm over Meliah Rage, though. Others I have yet to check out. Weren't Gang Green from Boston, too? There was potent HC scene in boston if I remember correctly ...

Yeah, Cardinal Sin were originally from Puerto Rico, and they moved to the US for a couple of years in late 80s / early 90s (somewhere at that time). They nearly recorded an full-length album, but their label ran out of money as they spent everything on a Biohazard album or something like that - You can read about it in the "Resurrected" booklet - it's been a long time since I checked it for the last time ...

I absolutely dig Meliah Rage! I always thought they don't get the recognition they deserve among true metallers. They play crushing, powerful metal the Metal Church way and in my opinion they piss all over some more hyped US metal bands, like Liege Lord, Helstar or Vicious Rumors. Anyone not familiar with ML should pick up Kill to Survive and/or Solitary Solitude for some serious headbanging madness.

FORMICIDE and MELIAH RAGE are too great bands. I've read somewhere that MELIAH RAGE will play a few gigs later this year.
I don't like WARGASM that much. I don't know about the others but I'll put an ear on them this week end !

NO WAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Definately not better than Vicious Rumors!
What about 'BOSTON' ...from Boston!
Also: MASS & ANAL CUNT ...can't think of many more... Boston is famous for alternative bands... Dinosaur Jnr, Pixies, Sonic Youth etc...

Better indeed. But it's a matter of taste, I was never the biggest fan of that slick US power/speed with those high pitch vocals. I like it better raw and heavy, like Meliah Rage.

That's totally fine!
I have always worshipped the first 4 VR albums! I love that slick US speed/power stuff!
But I also love the raw heavy US metal too. MR are also great!
SAVATAGE are the perfect blend of both IMO!

VICIOUS RUMORS are one of the best example of an overrated band.
Helstar only ''Burning Star''(one of the best US releases) the others lower quality of course.
Liege Lord-Freedom's Rise masterpiece the others never cared to hear
Metal Church-Never cared to hear anyway too.

I never understood how something can be overrated if it is not talked about on a large scale,If you want to talk overrated how about necrophagist or mastodon, It seems like people like to call things they don't like overrated or bands that are considered classic and they don't agree with, so they just say oh its too overrated because its mentioned more than I like it to be because I don't like it and I don't want to hear about it.
Oh yeah and Burning Star is the worst helstar album its very generic.

Vicious Rumours are a very good band, indeed kind of thought highly of by many people (it happens with bands where charismatic people in them have died sadly) but not to the point where I'd call them overrated. Top-notch talent, top-notch musicianship, some awesome songs, what's not to like?
