Technothrash!

Hello, I originally sent an e-mail to the wonderful tyrant of The Corroseum, Dan to further the below inquiry, and he turned me towards the forum, so here it is!

Hello. I love the Corroseum, and I've found many a great record through it. My personal kink is technothrash. I know that you probably don't have a favourable opinion, mainly because of the skater anthrax-y type of thrash connection? Anyway, that's my poison, I'm proud of it! I wanted to ask you if you've heard - or simply even heard of - any artists in this field besides the list below. Whether you thought them good or not is not the primary thing, I will judge for myself (that I missed out on Sieges Even's first PHENOMENAL record because some person told me 'not as good as anything else they've done' for 5 years is something I'm not willing to risk again).

> Aftermath
> Anacrusis (quasi)
> Annihilator (quasi, more technical thrash than technothrash)
> Annon Vin
> Artillery
> Believer
> Calhoun Conquer
> Civil Defiance (in a very strange way related to the genre)
> Confessor (quasi)
> Coroner
> Cranium (not the speed metal hell band)
> Deathrow (Deception Ignored is in my top 5)
> Depressive Age
> Equinox (demi)
> Flaming Anger (you'd like those. German and obscure)
> Forced Entry (demi)
> Garden Wall (quasi)
> Hexenhaus (demi)
> Invocator
> Kinetic Dissent
> Living Death (quasi)
> Loincloth (via Confessor, quasi)
> Megace
> Mekong Delta (the original technothrash band)
> Mordred (quasi... reaching... almost not at all. Via Equinox I guess?)
> Realm
> Rosicrucian
> Sieges Even
> Spastic Ink (quasi)
> Spiral Architect (quasi)
> Thought Industry
> Tourniquet
> Toxik
> Watchtower
> Zero Hour (quasi, and bad)
>

I ask because I found Spectral Incursion through your site, which I LOVED LOVED LOVED. techno-power and techno-proto-thrash or speed welcome too! Anything that is weird or strange but technically equipped is my sort of love, Voivod-influenced are okay, although usually they go towards the 'hey I can play strange chords with my guitar!' way instead of technothrash.

Thank you in advance.

--

after Dan's timely reply ;) I've unearthed a few ones I've missed like Arcane and Defiance, but I'm sure I'm still missing loads and loads! So what do you say? Will you help the nerdthrasher or should he grow some balls and listen to Hirax or something like most reasonable people?

Again, I stress whether it's good or not is not the issue, I love a lot of records in the genre most people think are absolutely worthless (Xentrix come to mind...) so I will probably hunt down and at least listen to any recommendations.

I am not sure if stuff like Tension's 'Breaking Point' or stuff like Helstar counts, though it's certainly technically able... but what the hell, if Hexenhaus count, they do to. Bring it on!

Welcome to the board.

I think you need to listen to the first Inquisition (Col) stuff before they went "modern black metal". Excellent technical thrash, sort of mix between Kreator and Sadus, though they have an unique sound.

Not many people like it, but Blind Illusion's LP is a technical thrash masterpiece imo, furious and very skillful.

Cyclone "Inferior To None" is a very great record for technical thrash lovers.

And of course there's Sindrome you have to check out.

There are of course more:

just a short notes what I think of this bands as I'm in a hurry :)

> Aftermath
I really like The Eyes of Tomorrow album - very solid stuff!!

> Anacrusis (quasi)
Quasi? What do you mean? One of the best bands ever, both, judging by music and by lyrics.

> Annihilator (quasi, more technical thrash than technothrash)
technical thrash = tech thrash = techthrash = technothrash = or am I wrong? Anyway, Annihilator would still rank in my top 10 list.

> Annon Vin
Never heard.

> Artillery
By Inheritance is my favorite album from Europe, but the rest just isn't on the same level.

> Believer
My favorite Christian band along with Tourniquet - favorite would be Sanity Obscure!!

> Calhoun Conquer
Never heard.

> Civil Defiance (in a very strange way related to the genre)
Same here.

> Confessor (quasi)
Again, same here.

> Coroner
I have never really gotten into their stuff - I'll have to pay more attention in the future.

> Cranium (not the speed metal hell band)
...

> Deathrow (Deception Ignored is in my top 5)
Same here, DI is out of the world album!! Their only above-average album in my opinion, though ...

> Depressive Age
A weird band ... but I like 'em :)

> Equinox (demi)
Demi? :) Auf Wiedersehen is a very solid album in my opinion, don't know about the rest.

> Flaming Anger (you'd like those. German and obscure)
Don't know em.

> Forced Entry (demi)
Same as Coroner, never paid enough attention to them ...

> Garden Wall (quasi)
I have no idea.

> Hexenhaus (demi)
Very good band!!!

> Invocator
GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enough said :)

> Kinetic Dissent
A bit to funky :) But good!

> Living Death (quasi)
Nah .. I like World Neuroses, but the rest is ... :)

> Loincloth (via Confessor, quasi)
Don't know em.

> Megace
Same.

> Mekong Delta (the original technothrash band)
And same here!

> Mordred (quasi... reaching... almost not at all. Via Equinox I guess?)
Probably the best of funky-thrash bands.

> Realm
Great music, average lyrics .. blah...

> Rosicrucian
Don't know em.

> Sieges Even
I've heard only 1 song.

> Spastic Ink (quasi)
......

> Spiral Architect (quasi)
.......

> Thought Industry
.......

> Tourniquet
Thrashed Mercyful Fate! Well, at leas on 1st album. As I said, my fav. Xian band with Believer.

> Toxik
I prefer the 1st album!

> Watchtower
The same situation as with Coroner and Forced Entry.

> Zero Hour (quasi, and bad)
Don't know em.

Try D.B.C.'s Universe for example.

Welcome to the board :D

Im also in a hurry, what comes to mind first is OSIRIS - FUTURITY AND HUMAN DEPRESSIONS from the Netherlands, good album.

But don't get excited yet, wait till Noisenik appears here in your thread, he also loves that kind of stuff and he sure will lead you to technothrash-hell and back.

I am crying tears of joy and I haven't even started to investigate the recommendations. Thank you all for your replies so far.

sovdat, when I say 'quasi' or 'demi' I don't mean these are inferior bands. I mean they are only partly technothrash.

As to technical thrash = technothrash, I'd have to say no. This is one of my favourite genres and I've given this lots of thought (restless at night, while in the shower, you know). A good example is Rosicrucian or indeed Annihilator. It's one thing to play thrash while being a very good guitarist, and another to accentuate specific technocratic (techno- ) qualities of the music. It comes down to aesthetics: a technothrash band has really complex structures, not just techy riffs. The lyrics are usually politically charged (though this is a thrash trend, one reading of Deathrow's 'Machinery' for example in contrast to a token political Anthrax song will make the difference clear) and accentuate the schizoid quality of the intelligent individual trapped in a deterministic and fatalistic reality.

But as I said, I'll take anything metal and technical which isn't technical death metal (which really bores me) and I'll sort it out myself.

Hellcome!

As you've probably seen I'm stapled to the page whether being really present or not. Being bored of non-stop login and logout ... I'm in hurry at the moment, but will return to thread asap, that is in the evening hours. OmenOfSteel is right. I am techthrash nut. Darn, if I'd know that you guys are so eager to participate I'd start it myself

I didn't expect people to be interested! I almost thought I'd have to mention how much I love Manilla Road and Fates Warning so people wouldn't spit on me :P

Thank you (all) for the welcome. Noisenik, eagerly awaiting your reply.

Dyoxen - "First Among Equals" would probably be an album right up your alley. I think it's the only one they ever did. Destruction also turned quite technical by their underrated "Cracked Brain". One of their best albums I think!

Yes!!!! I second this! Get it now! Incredible!

& also if you can find it: 'TARAMIS - Stretch Of The Imagination'! Great technical power thrash from Australia... a bit like Watchtower!?

& if you dont know NOCTURNUS!??? You must seek all their albums as well!

& 'TALION - Killing The World' ... & 'ACCUSER - Who Dominates Who?'!!!!

All great! :D

That'll be hard to track down, but I'll certainly try. I did download some latater Inquisition and while not bad, I think I've had my share of thinly recorded metal to praise lord satan for a while.
Not many people like it, but Blind Illusion's LP is a technical thrash masterpiece imo, furious and very skillful.
I'm afraid I'm one of those that don't like it much. Then again I should give it another honest listen soon.
Cyclone "Inferior To None" is a very great record for technical thrash lovers.
I have Brutal Destruction and it doesn't point to much in terms of technothrash, but a lot of bands have made such a switch! I'll check it out.
And of course there's Sindrome you have to check out.
Could I have more info on this one? I am having a hard time tracking them down.

sovdat and OmenOfSteel, I don't know any of those bands! Excellent! I will investigate.

DaN: Omnitron are exquisite! Thanks for the upload!

I'll check out Dyoxen. I had avoided 'Cracked Brain' because I didn't know destruction had a shift in style ever. It's not that I don't like Infernal Overkill - who can not like it? - it's that I don't need two, or three Infernal Overkills.

Taramis, Talion, Accuser, all in the do-listen list!

Nocturnus are a fine band - though I'd say overrated - and I don't like the second record, 'Thresholds' nearly as much as I like The Key. When Browning leaves, I don't consider it Nocturnus anymore at all. But that's the thing, technical death metal is a whole different realm from what I'm looking for, so that's why I didn't include bands like Atheist or Cynic in my list, of which many people have a flawed idea that they're similar or have a similar appeal to bands like Watchtower or Sieges Even.

The ''Power thrash'' term is correct, although this particular album leans more towards ''power''. Still recommended.

Sieges Even: Well, only the debut fits the description of technothrash. However, it's my least favorite of their first three (and best) albums, more like a Watchtower rip-off, not much originality in any department. The next two are over the top! Both are prog masterpieces!

Cracked Brain is different to early Destruction releases, it sounds like it was recorded in California. :)

To write shortly:

1. To paraphrase mighty DaN: Technothrash "is" albums, much less bands.
2. Technothrash bands are few and far between.
3. Real Technothrash is difficult to listen to! Either because so convoluted, or because of grit. (Narrower and true notion)

Some epitomic Technothrash albums (chr.):

Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly
VoiVod - Killing Technology
VoiVod - Dimension Hatross
Coroner - No More Color
Holy Moses - The New Machine Of Liechtenstein
Watchtower - Control And Resistance
Deathrow - Deception Ignored
Acid Reign - Obnoxious
Omnitron - Masterpeace
Toxik - Think This
Sabbat - Mourning Has Broken

To add to the list: (may also include technically well played thrash metal, s.c. progressive thrash metal, ...)

Doom (Jpn)
Usurper (Hol) see my avatar
Defcon
Obliveon
Nocturn
Nephastus
Hydra Vein
R.I.P.
Warmath
Stone
Ravenous

and more ...
