Hårdrock på Svenska

You axed for it...
Well, at least Fucking Åmål did. Here's some old personal faves from the early years of the FWOSHM, all with vocals in Swedish. Most of the stuff fall within the Hard Rock/early "nwobhm"-cathegory, but still far from boring pub-rock I'd say. The metallic exception would be the superb JONAH QUIZZ demo (which I thought we'd already uploaded here, but apparently not).

CARTAGO - nattens skuggor (shadows of the night)
This one starts off like a pretty generic HR piece, but wait for those choirs. Not bad, eh?

DARK ICE - förödande tidevarv (disastrous times)
Quite an original song. Epic Melodic Hard Rock? Can't get enought of this one.

DREAM - mitt djup blir ditt djup (my depth becomes your depth)
Since everybody loved their single I uploaded a while back I guess you've been dying to hear this one, right? :P Seriously though, this is one of the finest melodic HR songs I've ever heard.

GLORY - hjälp mig (help me)
No relation to the Swedish aor band. Sounds like NWOBHM c:a 79-80 and how can that be a bad thing?

JEREMIAH - bluff-stop
JEREMIAH - lost in lund
Great, heavy HR 7" from '79 - no more, no less.

JONAH QUIZZ - demo 83 (?)
Johan Langqvist's pre-CANDLEMASS act. One of the finest demos ever from this country.

SECOND HAND - jag vill ha (I want)
SECOND HAND - tunga droppar (heavy drops)
Maybe it's me who's been listening too much to this stuff, but despite the music being pretty standard HR I really like the songs for some reason. Could be the excellent vocals.

STORMWARNING - barn av gatan (streetchild)
A HEAVY Hard Rock-cruncher that may not be that special, but this band later morphed into COUNT RAVEN, so I figured some of you still would like to hear this.

TYFUZ - häng på (come on)
TYFUZ - arbetslös (unemployed)
The definition of Rare & Obscure. To this day I still only know of one copy of the single ('80) which I found many years ago in an old storage. I'm probably overrating this too for personal reasons, but Arbetslös is a great hardrocker.

UMEÅ SMALL BAND - det finns ingen hjälp att få (there's no help in sight)
UMEÅ SMALL BAND - kronofogden (the bailiff)
More driving, older nwobhmish stuff. Too bad their later singles went in the wrong direction :(

WAGABOND - this is life
WAGABOND - wagabond
A relatively new discovery on my part, and a real grower as well. Their theme-song is a real crusher, heavy as hell, almost epic stuff. Yeah, this is special shit for sure. The single was released in '79 and is pretty much unknown outside of Sweden.

You know, together with those 2 SNÖFALL-songs this makes a pretty nifty "conceptual mix-CDR"...

So who will be the first to see the genious in the DREAM and DARK ICE cuts then?

Listening right now. These Jonah Quizz tracks are huge. Everything leading up to JQ has been really nice foot-tapping stuff, but this... woah. Cheers!

There have been lots of reviews and discussions about the gig on a lot of internet forums. Not on this one though. Seems that around here it is more relevant do discuss filth-obscure US kvlt metal and share piss-rare mp3's than to discuss a recent gig by something as shameful as a currently active band.

Anyway, the gig was great, apart from some problems with the sound and a forgotten lyric line or two. Johan Langquist was the guy most have waited for, and I don't think he disappointed anyone. His voice is still great, and he sang "Sorcerer's Pledge", "Under the Oak" etc. with confidence. He looked a bit nervous though and was not much of a frontman actually, but what the heck.

But that was not the only highlight. I personally was very excited about them finally doing some songs off the fantastic "Chapter VI" album, and they sure didn't waste any time. As the ligths went off and the guitar riff started the night I instantly knew it was "The Dying Illusion" and I was sent to heaven. What a song, what an opening! Tomas Vikström was probably the best showman of the vocalists they used, he was totally wild, all over the place. And they did "Where the Runes Still Speak"! I shit you not, I had tears in my eyes. Best Candlemass song ever? Damn close. Robert Lowe was great too, above all he did an awe inspiring rendition of "Samarithan".

Downsides? Well, Mikael Åkerfeldt singing "At the Gallows End" with death metal vocals was not the best idea ever. Tony Martin was not very good in "Witches", and the song is simply not strong enough to stand as an encore after 4 monumental cuts off Epicus closing the original set. Good thing "Bullfest" followed and was quite fun, and that the night was ended with dignity and power, when Vikström, Lowe and Langquist wrapped things up in "Solitude".

DaN: Cool stuff from SECOND HAND !! You should upload the stuff from OVERKILL too (from the Rock Beast LP, even though its not in Swedish). Maybe upload it somewhere else.
