Voice Of Destruction played Thrash Metal on their demos...
Black Rose was a Hard Rock band in the early 80s...
Yep, Odyssey was from SA as well, played good Heavy Metal...
There were a few more bands in the late 80`s/ early 90s who played Thrash Metal, but I cannot remember their names anymore...

The only real CLASSIC record I know from S.A. is ODYSSEYs selftitled album, which is from 1991. I also have a very obscure 7" from BLAST called "Little Sister", good Melodic Metal, private release from 1988.
Voice of Destruction sucked in my opinion, at least on CD, I never heard the demos. For Black Rose I never really cared a lot, as they only play Hard Rock, but I never heard them.
Another band is STRIDER. But I never saw or heard that album, nor I know anyone who has it.

I once saw Voice Of Destruction in mid-90es when they toured Germany with Katatonia and In The Woods. They played perfect Power Metal at that time. Their CD (absolute killer song: "Funeral", a Iron Maiden like ballad-song in the Hallowed Be Thy Name area) and 3"-MCD (with their 2nd überbest song ever: If I Had A Soul #1). Both releases suffer from a bit weak sound and a bit strange sounding drums, but they are very good releases indeed.
I haven't heard their demo releases though but reading old fanzine reviews they played way thrashier in the past.

The hidden live track on the CD is a demo song...

So apartheid had done it well

. Isolation probably too. Thought there was more underground. Hey Peter, have you perhaps heard Arcana XXII - reportedly heavy metal that was credited to one VOD member moved to Namibia?

I have the Arcana XXII - Fallen From Grace debut CD from 1999 (self-released), which I do not like very much. I remember it has a bad production, so I listened to it once or twice. It is way more "normal" Metal compared to V.O.D.
Their last CD got good reviews in some German magazines/fanzines but I didn't feel the urge getting this CD.

I was in contact with a guy from SA and he also told me of the bands Axe, Urban Assault and Stryder, but I guess these were active in the early 90s, though...they did release only demos....
