Now, the other side of the story. Which bands ruled back then and are still great to see or hear? Personally I vote IRON MAIDEN, they really never let me down, every album is a great listening experience IMO.
Others?

I dont think ACID, CLOVEN HOOF or LIVING DEATH ever released a bad album IMO...
...or VOIVOD or RUSH (not being biased ...haha...

)
& even tho' they only had 2 releases, HOLY TERROR's albums were quite exquisite!

Hmmm, Manilla Road never really sucked, although they are not as great now as they once were.

Razor, of course.
Exodus, King Diamond, even Overkill didn't release a single bad album (although the last ones aren't so brilliant) ... Megadeth! (Save for Risk)
And a bunch of cool band from the late 80s with one or two albums

Motorhead.
And a few death metal bands: Bolt Thrower, Dismember, Asphyx
As long as bands unleashed great music back in their prime I couldn't care less if they put out rubbish afterwards. Even passable or 'ok' new releases by old bands are more or less dispensible when compared to the classics of yore.

I don't think DEATH was mentionned here. Chuck Schuldiner has released top-quality albums through his whole carreer.
