I got a load of stuff in Generation Records a few years back, if you google it - all second hand CDs, no vinyl, but there was tons of metal, all $1 - $4 a CD. Definitely worth a nosey.

I hit 3 spots today and only purchased 6 LP's

Saw a nice collection in one spot. Nothing rare but very nice clean stuff for $5 each.

Are there any record shops worth visiting in these cities: Las Vegas/San Francisco, interested ranging from heavy metal-doom/stoner-blues rock-kraut rock and jazz. thanks, will be visiting there during early september.

for an somehow mindblowing experience (compared to the kinds of stores us Europeans are used to), I strongly recommend Amoeba Records in the Haight-Ashbury. they probably carry all the stuff you mentioned and some more

the one in Hollywood is even huger, in case you're going there too

I went to the SF amoeba shop in early 1999 & came out with so much stuff, i had to buy an extra suitcase when i flew home to carry it all in.Found Septic Death live 10" there for 20$ & some old (1989-1990) death metal 7"s too for 1$ a piece. But this is now 11 years ago,so it probably has changed (the availability i mean). Good luck, it's a great city!!

Never been to the Amoeba in S.F., but the one in Hollywood you could be there all day looking through everything. They're kind of annoying with how they catalogue their stock (you got to look all over basically) but lots of good finds to be had. I'd assume the SF one is the same way.

In Vegas, Zia Records is about the only option. Their used selection is pretty good and I've always found some steals. There are two locations. I recommend the one on Eastern Ave (its a nice long walk from the strip). They seem to have the better stock and more used. Although the one on Sahara did have a really great vinyl discount bin.

amoeba in san francisco was nice, bought 2 st. vitus lps, sir lord baltimore re-releases, and the witchfinder general boxset.
there were more records shops in the same street as amoeba (height street), funny names as black pancake records .. and shraxul..? that last one was closed.. too bad seemed like a metal record shop.

there was one other interesting shop in san francisco, it was near the fisherman wharf, forgot the street name. ill show a picture, they had a cellar with (there was a sign) 50.000 records, pretty chaotic, I looked for 15 min, had to go then, but seemed promising. asked employee, if he had a stash of metal somewhere.. but he didnt knew, the owner was not there.. so i dont know... next day I had to fly back. so maybe hidden stuff there....

Ah looks like a great place

Seeing pics like these are as good as the "collector porn" ones. You can just imagine the feeling of going through all those stacks of records, not knowing if there is anything there worth looking at twice. That's ecstasy man, or better than heroin.

When I moved to SF for a few months back in '91 it was a treasure trove of vinyl, especially on Haight Street. I mailed most of it home in advance but I still brought a huge box home on the plane with me. It was so big that I almost missed my flight back to New York because I refused to let them put it in the cargo hold.

I've been back there several times over the years but most of the better stores are gone and and the newer ones are ok but nothing special. I've found more horror soundtracks than metal vinyl during my trips there in recent years.

As far as record stores in NYC these days, there's really not much. Here are the decent ones but they're really hit or miss:

Academy Records (one in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn)
Bleecker Bobs (Manhattan)
Generations Records (Manhattan)
Kim's Underground Video (Manhattan)
Infinity Records (Long Island)
High Fidelity (Long Island)
Mr. Cheapo's (Long Island)

Sadly, the mecca for heavy metal vinyl in the Northeastern United States, Slipped Disc Records, closed their doors in 2008.

haha, I know this shop well. I forget the name at the moment. You would think there might be some good finds there...In the late 90's, over a period of several months, I made it a point of going through most of the stock, lets say 80% (some of it was too buried to get to). I bought ONE record for this effort, MASTER "With the Noose Around the Neck"(I guess that is the translation). They seemed to never buy any more records after that, always seemed to be the same stock. My guess is they must sell drugs or something to stay in business since I almost never saw anyone in the place.
