Could someone suggest for me an album from the dark years, a CD to hunt for, up there with the likes of, for example... Syris - same, Cauldron Born - Born Of The Cauldron, New Eden - Obscure Master Plan, Destiny's End - BDTD etc.

There were plenty of great metal albums from US bands in the '90s!
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are the Sick
Nocturnus - The Key
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Garden of Shadows - Heart of the Carona
Dawnbringer - Unbleed
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Ministry - Psalm 69
But that's probably not what you're looking for. For heavy metal, there's Manowar - The Triumph of Steel and the first two Slough Feg albums, but you probably already know about those.

WITCH MEADOW - When Midnight Falls, fantastic demo.
Never been into CRILLSON or SANCTUM, both are quite average imo

A personal favourite of mine,
HOOKERS : Hookers II - Black Visions Of Crimson Wisdom.
Raggedy Motorhead inspired Rawkin' Metal.

Not too many really excellent ones. Especially between 1991 to 1998.
Most (not all !) of the ones wich where named are Good but nothing more.
These are more than good ;
EXXPLORER - A Recipe for power
ETERNITY X - The Edge (evtl. too proggy and melodic for what you are searching)
TITAN FORCE - Winner / Loser
CAGE - Unveiled
early KAMELOT
SAHARA - Both
HANKER - Everything
CRYPTIC VISIONS - Same
Some very good Prog. Metal Albums where published in the 90ies.

I really like that Crillson album. I'm glad I picked it up when I saw it. It's not balls out "Ample Destruction"-like US Metal but it somehow appeals to me; can't describe.
What about the first 2 Iced Earth albums? IMHO both belong to the best albums from the 90's in general.
