Best thing about Metal

Some months ago Dan and me were having a phone conversation and he told me one interesting thing and I've been giving it a thought everynow and then since then. He told me that discovering a new album and giving it its first spin was the best thing about this whole collecting thing. Just sitting there in front of the record player and listening to something totally new. It is a damn nice feeling for sure. Probably more intersting than listening to the old classics for the millionth time. I guess there are many records in my collection which I only heard once and I keep on getting new stuff all the time.
So what do you people think?

Well I personally love the feeling when you realise how great album X is. Some times it can be great from the first spin and other times you have to give it a few listenings to really "get it" but that moment of realization is what I love the most. Maybe.

I agree with the Erlking. There are tons and tons of albums that you hear and think, "Well, it's OK." But it's such a great (and rare) feeling when you finally get into an album and realize "This isn't OK... this is awesome!" It happened to me recently with Manilla Road - The Deluge and Warlord - Deliver Us.

No doubt about it. Just unravelling something special keeps me coming back for more!

I'll go for the moment when a great record finally 'lets you in'. One that at first seems impenetrable but you know something is there and you play it lots and lots and think about it, and at some point you "get it" and there forms a relationship between the music and you that is deeper than usual. It influences your fantastical reality and it conveys a brilliance and pathos. I listened to "Nothingface" for years before 'getting it'. Same with "Control and Resistance", same with "Melissa", same with "Awaken the Guardian".
The love I have for HM doesn't come fast, but it is deep and profound and its implications have shaped me as a human being, not just as a music listener or "fan".
I enjoy the historical aspect very much as well and of course finding new stuff that I deem essential fills me with hope for the idiom, but the situation above is IT, for me.

I like finding an old band's album/demo/EP/whatever and it kicking major arse. Then the subsequent hunt to find all their releases.

Discovering new music for sure, giving LP a first spin, listening to something you haven't listened in a long time and having that "heureka!" moment by getting really into it.
But one thing not mentioned is gigs. Getting together with mates, having beers at someones place/in a pub before, then (hopefully) witnessing a good gig, moshing/air guitar/what ever and more beers afterwards. As the years have gone by I have began to like gigs more and more.

The joy of buying an unknown album, playing it and being totally floored by it, realising it is the real deal and knowing you will always love it.

The best thing about metal for me is the thrill of tracking down and finding really obscure bands/releases (something I like to do a lot). Its so fucking exilarating, after a multi-year search with no info FINALLY getting a breakthrough lead out of nowhere, when you never expected to, and before you know it your talking to the band on the phone, and being told more info then you can comprehend, and amidst being completely blown away, you learn that you have a free copy of thier album/demo (that you never imaged you'd live to see in person) on the way. Then theres the rush you get coming home after a busy day of working and bullshit and seeing that LP mailer sitting in front of your mailbox...and you know what it is but when you open it your surprised anyway. Putting it on really loud, banging your fucking head, thinking a week ago you would have said this day would NEVER come... just awesome...

The best thing about Metal to me is that it becomes your whole life, more or less. Every day is pretty much surrounded by it whether you think about it or not. It's very profound. But I'm sure you all know that!
But if I have to choose one single thing, and not the whole experience, l would probably choose the times you go back to listen to your absolute favourite band (or something nostalgic) 4 in the morning after a gig. Alcohol and friends help for sure. You can't really hold back the air guitar, nor your feelings, at that point! At least that is what I feel after this summer.

Definitely understand and agree with the feeling of "getting it" when listening to a great album that demands your full attention. It took me awhile to get into "Melissa" as well but once I did I couldn't get enough of it and played it over and over.
All heavy metal, regardless of sub genre(as long as it's GOOD to my ears obviously),affects me in the same basic way. It fills me with power, confidence, energy and a sense of pride. Proud to be able to appreciate such great music that many people don't understand or just dismiss as "noise."
Heavy metal can also be quite a fitting soundtrack to the world that I live in while at the same time aiding me in escaping reality.
