Yeah, many good bands released a mediocre/bad debut, and then they got good/awsome in their next releases...which are your examples guys :?: ...(im not talking about how they progressed technically over the years)

Well I still think Rock A Rolla is a great album, but Sad Wings is obviously better.

Manilla Road came into their own on around the third album.

Belgian Warhead released a rather mediocre first 'Speedway'album, but I just love the second album 'The day after'.

Great satanic speed metal.

Not very kvlt, but Kamelot's 1st three albums were sub-par, then they started turning out fantastic ones

I like Cirith Ungol's debut, but their later stuff is better

All three of the big UK doom bands (Anathema, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride) did much better on later albums than on their debuts

Anathema's 'Serenades' is their best along with Pentecost III. My Dying Bride's 'Symphonare Infernus' EP along with 'As the Flower Withers' remains their most potent work. Paradise Lost's 'Lost Paradise' is perhaps the only one of those you mentioned I agree did better later on.

I tend to think Aria got better and better until (at least) Blood for Blood.

More recent but Belphegor and Cacodaemon may fit in that thread too.

i must say the first Viking album (thrash US) is a lil boring, but the second release is the one that really has personality

although i dont like these bands, they released albums that marked and era in metal later on, specially in Paradise Lost case, the Draconian Times of P.Lost is a totally different band from the one in the first album

this is what im talking about in this topic :P

They didn't really shape up until their third or forth album as well.

Savage Grace were a good call, definitely.

Also, Taramis! Queen of Thieves was a bit boring, hah
