The release from the dictatorship that is Steve Harris maybe. Combined with the general movement from seventies Hard Rock into AOR-territory/general blandness in the early to mid-eighties (Rainbow, Kiss, Uriah Heep, B.Ö.C. and about every Southern Rock band there was etc). Again the lack of musical integrity and identity that a true artist (S Harris - or is he just stubborn?) must possess is showing.

All good points GJ, you're probably right about the changing musical landscape at the time having a major effect. Also it occurs to me that perhaps the change of style for those guys was to try and get some distance from their Iron Maiden pasts, so that they weren't "typecast" as ex-Maiden members. Fat chance, but that may have been part of their reasoning at the time. Or maybe they were always "wimps in Metal clothing" all along, which is why they got ejected along the way. In Stratton's case this may be true, as all his post-Maiden work was very melodic in nature.
Intersting that all the bands you mentioned here (Rainbow, Kiss, Uriah Heep, B.Ö.C. and about every Southern Rock band there was etc), saw their careers suffer somewhat because of their watering down their trademark sound. B.O.C., Blackfoot etc. never really recovered. But i'm getting off topic now.

This is a bit of an epic task, but is there a complete list of all the NWOBHM LPs that were released during the wave?

And for the record, Cloven Hoof's self titled is unbeatable for me. Everything about it is simply godly.

JAGUAR. power games
HOLOCAUST. the nightcomers
TOKYO BLADE. s/t
CLOVEN HOOF. s/t
etc etc etc...

Granted bands like DESOLATIOn ANGELS and SAMURAI'S albums came out after the whole fuss but they had been in existence at the height of the storm so their place is relevant.

Well, I love some of the big names like Saxon, Maiden, Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Raven, Venom and so on. Weird how Witchfinder General were generally unrated at the time, or at least that's how I remember it.

Other than these, I can only echo Dark Stranger: Cloven Hoof's debut is a real masterpiece.

Great ones also include (but not exclusively) early Tokyo Blade, Nightcomers, Time Tells No Lies, Heroes Saints and Fools and Power Games.

Samurai is quite good, at least the first songs on side a. I don't like the flipside that much, they tend to get a bit repetitive after a while.

BOC's 1998 album "Heaven Forbid" is awesome.

Just a footnote to their career though, as my comment is to your discussion.

BIG LOVE! I can understand someone finding it a bit laid-back...but it has a medieval schmaltzyness/whimsy that I can't resist. And at the very least 'Badon Hill' has a huge fat hairy pair, swinging tween'st its legs as it ricket-edly charges t'wards its enemies on their half-hearted flight. The title-track is beautiful :')

voltz is a 10/10 album but is not metal at all (so it belongs to land of mystery or something)

This band belongs in the same group as Demon in my opinion.

Edit: and I just realized that Zherneboh is probably the same guy that gave the voltz album a 97% on the METAL archives...
