Are W.A.S.P. real metal or not? POLL ADDED PLACE YOUR VOTE
Opening riff was reminiscent to Wild Child to these ears, but on the whole the song was different enough. Quite good. I need to catch up on newer W.A.S.P. some time. Unholy Terror (2002) was really great but for some reason I have not gotten around to checking out later albums.

No they are hard rock...I consider them like a west coast Twisted Sister. I hear no Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest in WASP's sound.
At the end of the day, it does not matter if you enjoy these "gateway to metal" bands or not what matters is can tell the difference from the hard rock bands in the vein of Montrose, Runaways, Van Halen from the REAL METAL sounding and RIFFING bands !!

But Ion, how is that going to help someone who's deaf?
There's no doubt there's lots of 70s influence in much of WASP's songs and in some places that is very evident. I think their songs often bordered on what I would call metal, but much more portent questions are:
Are WASP any good? Do they have balls? Are the records worth buying?
The answers are "yes", "yes" and "quite a few of them".

I know I ain't doing much,
doing nothing means a lot to me.

True Knut. But is still think it's a bit strange that this question comes up and that Wasp seem to be the great divider. Iron Maiden sports lots and lots of seventies hard rock and prog influences and has very little of the "metallic" approach of say certain Judas Priest, Accept or Manowar songs. I find it a bit odd to make Heavy Metal some kind of quality stamp or a strict idealistic viewpoint. To me it's just a musical genre grown out of the Rock-Hard Rock familiy. Some of Wasp's stuff are more traditional Hard Rock whilst other lie well within Heavy Metal constrictions (most of the debut album in any case). The question is what is it that makes something Heavy Metal. I guess stuff like certain scales, harmonies, chord progressions as well as the character of sound is what sets it appart from "traditional" Hard Rock (and of course, most often to a greater extent, from other sorts of popular music). But it all comes down to how you balance the ingredients. And where then to draw all the different borders? (How much blues can we add? How melodic can we be? How much keyboards? How little distortion?) When I grew up in the early - mid eighties bands like Judas Priest and Manowar kind of represented an extreme in Heavy Metal in terms of imagery and musical form. But I would rather call them Heavy Metal purists than being true Heavy Metal. Saxon, Maiden, Scorpions, Dio, Wasp were all Heavy Metal bands to me. And then again I believe both Manowar (Carry On) Accept (Save Us, obviously but also many songs post-Balls to the Wall) and Judas Preist (Point of Entry, Turbo) have made far "poppier" music than Iron Maiden or Wasp (who were "rockier" ever did. So by calling Wasp Hard Rock you could also call Judas Priest Pop Metal.
All confused I guess.
...I also believe my (almost) complete ignorance when it comes to modern Hard Rock and Heavy Metal offshoots makes me being somewhat less protective. It sure seems to be an ugly world out there.

"There were fortunately thousands bands rawer than sweet WASP.....
Oh yeah Mr Tobiee I live for my nickname..it wasn't chosen for nothing Mr sweet banger..... "
I think the age and background of listener plays big part in this particular case. Mr."bigmouth" is one of those guys whor probably ordered Hellhanmmer demo from band directly in 1983 or 1984, sure he has different view on WASP heaviness and listened Morbid Angels playing LIVE in Florida rehearsal room in 1986, while some others worshipped "Inside the Electric Circus" LP. For some other WASP was maybe introduction to metal and therefore important. I understand both sides.
