I've got to admit to not being able to appreciate Merciful Fate, well Melissa is a good album but Don't break the oath - very dull, shiny production, go-nowhere songs... Talented musicians I know... It's the vocals that annoy me so much, I prefer Luther Beltz to King Diamond, his delivery is more subtle.

I fucking hate U2. One trick ponies with a sanctimonious prick as a front man :twisted:

Mercyful Fate rules. Fuckin' heavy as metal should be. I actually prefer Steve Bridges.

"Spotlight, Stagefright, fright!"

I adore Melissa but Don't Break the Oath suffers from streamlined and 'pretty' sound. Still a great album, but as a followup to something so monstrous...

Don't get me wrong - I have really tried with M. Fate and i completely understand what it is that makes them so good - it just never grabbed me. It's like roast lamb - I know that it's excellent, I just don't like it. For me Merciful Fate = roast lamb :lol: :lol: :lol:

LOL, nice parallelism! :lol: Well, to me Motorhead and AC/DC are like cauliflower. I know it sucks, and I hate it, while it is harmful for my thyroid---now you can kill me...

Hey, I like Ac/Dc, Motorhead AND cauliflower. I even eat them raw (cauliflowers that is). I tend to like at least one album by every one of the big names from the 70s, but the charms of Kiss keep escaping me.

Mercyful Fate, now there I only differ slightly from the majority (probably?) in that I think Don't Break the Oath matches Melissa (and the demos are NOT better than those two records!). ยจ

But I'll have to think again about "classics" I don't rate.

equate albums with food:
Painkiller = sushi: lots of variety, excellent, clinical production/presentation (sorry Helm), nice to share, goes great with a drink, leaves you wanting more. I could get into this type of review!

Pantera = Broccoli
Kreator=Aubergines
Dream Theater=split peas
Piledriver=tripe soup

I just can't fuckin stand all of them...

Kreator = cold porridge with bits of hard pasta mixed in - hard to consume, unsatisfying.

Only problem I can see with food analogies is that when you're REALLY starving, you'll eat anything and be glad because of it!

Brilliant, i laughed out loud. :wink:

On a slightly related note, i see there are a few here who can't get into Mercyful Fate, having heard the new Metallica song "The Day That Never Comes", you're probably gonna hate it too. Although it starts off like a ballad, the last four minutes sound like prime Fate! Harmony leads, time changes, spiralling riffage, it smacks of "Satan's Fall" to me.
I'm hoping the rest of their new material sounds like this, i know that's birds nest soup to some of you, but as they say, one mans meat is another mans poison.
:wink:

It's like somebody's highschool band trying to do a nwobhmesque medley. Prime Fate also requires actually brilliant riffs and solos and lots of them. Not just riffs and solos and lots of them.

I've never been all that crazy about EXODUS's "Bonded By Blood". I like it, but I'd much rather listen to HEATHEN's "Breaking The Silence".

As for MERCYFUL FATE I really think its almost all down to King's vocals. I like them, but I can understand some people just cannot take it. Funny, I remember back in the 80's Bob Muldowney of Kick Ass Monthly (a fairly influential fanzine that championed bands like SODOM and MEDIEVAL at the start of their careers) simply LOATHED King. He even congratulated some jerk-off at a FATE show that hurled rolls of toilet paper at King onstage. It was actually pretty funny - even though I do not approve of hassling bands on stage. :)

I've also never "gotten" most of ANVIL's stuff - "Forged In Fire" has some killer tracks, as does "Metal On Metal", but I find most of the first album just weak and stuff like "Mad Dog" embarrassing. Crazy thing is I actually quite like "This is Thirteen" - so go figure.
