Why does it take so long before one mentions the legendary WINTER?!!! "Into Darkness" must be one of the greatest doom/death-albums ever, if not THE best!!!!

Because he's asking about "true doom" and not "death doom"...???

Yeah, I mentioned Mental Funeral because I feel that sometimes sounds like classic Doom but Winter is just slow paced Death in my opinion.

Yeah, I fucked it up by mentioning Autopsy. Just ignore it and go ahead with the original subject of the thread.

No, you just don't get it.
If you want true doom with harsh vocals check out Dream Death!

Oh yes I'm getting it...just was confused because someone started talking about the relationship between 'true doom' and Autopsy. Nevermind...
So now the discussion is about 'true doom with harsh vocals'? So how 'harsh' the vocals must be to fit in that category?
Dream Death is fantastic though!

Yet WINTER kills 95% of so-called "True Doom" bands (and I like THE OBSESSED and some "True Doom" bands a lot).

Eh, that's another quite borderline band in my opinion.

Really, you don't hear masses of doom metal riffing there? If the last demo doesn't ring pure true doom to you, you should go see an ear doctor.

Aaaah... I understand nothing!
So what are the necessary ingredients that makes music ((Pure)True) Doom Metal?
What I need is some kind of disposition of what is allowed and what is not regarding tonality (scales), guitar sound, lyrics (general styles, subjects and attitude towards them), vocal character, rythmical patterns, pace and so on...
Or even better - forget it!

My thoughts exactly...this thread is going nowhere.

I agree. mentioned here only because the true doom clique likes it, and because of Penance obviously (truer doom is hard to find - or a heavier band for that matter). same goes for a number of other bands. were it not for some opinion leaders pushing the definitions around their favourite bands (often it's enough to be a friend of some opinion leaders to have your band included) we wouldn't bother so much with that term.
on the other hand I love Dream Death to death (um sorry for that one) and as many others I consider myself the absolute authority on True Doom (tm). on another day I'd probably flame someone for not mentioning them in a True Doom thread. any questions?

For those who feel confused about what True Doom is, well, that's why I started this thread
WINTER is a very ccool band IMO and they're exactly the type of band that made me start this thread. Personally, I don't consider them 'true doom' but rather slow death/maybe funeral doom (I have trouble making a distinction between those two styles, maybe there isn't one). However, I seem to see more and more reviews and posts that proclaim bands like WINTER or Reverend Bizarre to be "true doom", "what Doom Metal is really all about", "REAL Doom", etc etc.
I'm now wondering.if there's a 'generation gap' among Doom fans. Older fans like myself may consider bands like Vitus, Witchfinder General, and Candlemass 'true doom', but maybe younger/newer fans consider true doom to be stuff like Sun O))), Electric Wizard, Rev Bizzzare, funeral doom, etc.

Wow, I've just seen Paul Chain wasn't mentioned. Some of my favorite Doom songs are his, although I don't like every single thing I've heard from him (I Remember A Black Mass might be the best Doom song ever).
