There's not really any way to tell if you were close or not. The winner might have had a $300 bid as his max.

Yeah, they're always thinking "I've lost the item for 1 $ difference" but in the end you never know what's the max. bid. Once I was bidding on a rare record and 5 seconds before auction was over it was still at 1 $ while then any other guy threw in a 50 $ bid. I did win the record anyway but winning it for 1 $ would have been way cooler ...

Never seen a sleeved copy before. But what's the deal with South American records? Covers are nearly always fucked up!

Parts of South America does have heavy rain storms in the shape of El Nino that strikes once a year.
Also the living standards are/were not as high as we are used to here in Europe, at least outside the major cities.
I am sure an actual South American will correct me on some (major) details, but these are the 2 biggest reasons the way I have understood it to why South American LPs are hard to find with a nice sleeve.

Also the quality of the paper that was used was bad.
Very thin-light paper and also lack of the coating that a picture sleeve should have.
