example:

i find most material by KISS to be boring and played with mediocre musicianship, but i'll fully acknowledge that they were a groundbreaking band

I had a hard time choosing between the first four albums and "Blood On Ice". "Blood On Ice" is definitely my favourite of the viking-inspired albums. I like "Hammerheart" also, but I'm having some issues with Quorthon's 'vocals' on that record.

"Blood Fire Death" could be my favourite, but one little eenie weenie thingie ruins the overall atmosphere for me : that stupid childish guitar melody at the beginning of "Pace 'till Death". After all those years it still pisses me off... (but the rest of the song is great!)

I think I listened like, euh...100.000 times to "Under the Sign...", so that one would've been too obvious. Maybe I've heard it too much...

So I had to choose between the debut and "The Return...", which was not very difficult. I just like "The Return..." some more! One of the darkest and heaviest records ever! I always spin this one when I'm in a misanthropic mood...

The first Nordland deserves some praise too. It's a fantastic album that captures perfectly the icy cold atmosphere of the North although it's not as barbaric as Hammerheart nor as pessimistic as Twillight. I still believe Destroyer is the worst of their catalogue - a very weak effort, even Octagon and Requiem had their moments.

that is a fact for me, Destroyer didnt do anything for me at all, even the production was kind of weak...

Where is 'The Golden Walls Of Heaven" John??

My fave Bathory track ever!

Actually, I had a listen to the new Immortal the other day & it is total Blood Fire Death worship!!
If you get a chance listen to 'Hordes Of War' I think track 3 on the album, it's a total rip of Golden Walls Of Heaven track!

Hehe, that evil bastard surely knew what he was doing:

Silent watching gaze
Across the blackened plains
Two eyes like burning embers
Awaits the moment for the
North star to blaze

Sythanagon winged
Angel rides deaths wind
To cloudless sky
And sound a summon call of war
Now burn does the skyline

Soundless wings lacerate the night
Angels of death emerge accross the sky
Thorned heads spiky limbs climb the air up high
Attack of the pearly gates
Now wait for the sign...

Seen now is His star
Ablaze now risen in
The sign of the one with
A numbeer not a name
Now given is the sign

The Golden walls of heaven

Sound is given now of charge
A voice of war does cry
The cry does sound the signal
And the walls are stormed
Now fly

Swords are drawn in soundless flight
Above the walls of gold
The winged angels of death descend
A thousand from above
Now heaven is in its' last throes of death

Sacred shrine of life and death
Apharamons gold key
The raping of holy interior
And all concealed
Now masturbated upon is throne of gold

Scattered battered wings
Along the palaces and streets
Trophy of the victory
Attached to spear of the Beast
Now spitted at is the scalp of God

Well, since you like those two, I advise you to get "Blood On Ice" as soon as possible! "Nordland I" is also in the same style, and is said to be good, but I've never heard it myself. Then buy the others in this following order : "Blood Fire Death" - "Under The Sign..." - "The Return..." - "Bathory".

As everybody said before: THAT'S A HARD CHOICE!

I've voted for the self titled, because this is the beginning and it contains the essence of Quorthon's awesome riffing style.

But I like The Return, UTSOTBM, BFD and HAmmerheart a lot too.
