In an old interview Quorthon said:
"My personal reason for forming Bathory was I wanted to create a mix of the atmosphere of early Black Sabbath, the energy of early Motorhead and the pace of early GBH".

Apart that he claimed that he didn't listen to music at all after one point...

Personally, I only like the Asatru era of Bathory.

Not quite. What he did claim was that he hadn`t listened to any metal band save for BS and Motorhead. He`s said to have been in some Oi!/punk bands in the early 80`s it was rather punk rock he would get off on back then.

Then again: was he serious about that?

But seriously isn't Slayer one of the most important extreme metal act ? They have explored the boundaries of Thrash Metal and even paved the way for both Death Metal and Black Metal.
