Just purely because i've been rediscovering it recently, i had a quick look through this thread and was surprised to see that no-one had mentioned SLEDGEHAMMER's album.
Confusingly it was released as both "Sledgehammer" & "Blood On Their Hands", but whatever the title there's some great NWoBHM to be found lurking in it's grooves.
Not the heaviest band of the era certainly, but Sledgehammer were a band with their own individual style, songwriting know how and memorable hooks a plenty. I just wish "Fantasia" was on the album too.

Sledgehammer lp was originally released as blood on their hands, but rereleased with bonus songs with another cover. Have their blood on their hands lp, long time I listened to it, but there is some great songs in it!
Some LPs that I like:
Deep Switch - nine inches of god (post-nwobhm)
Cloven Hoof - s/t
Blitzkrieg - a time of changes
Wolf - edge of the world
Ritual - widow
Battleaxe - burn this town
Witchfinder General - death penalty/friends of hell
among ALOT of others.

Agree w/ avenger that the VOLTZ album is pretty bad. It sounds like watered-down Led Zeppelin at times, and that is not a good thing for anyone to sound like.
Also agree that lixir- 'son of odin' is overrated. Other than 2-3 tracks ('treachery', 'pandora's box'( I never could get into this album. It's not bad but comes across as very flat/kind of boring. It needed something to give it more punch

Yeah Nightsblood, exactly my thinking. "Son Of Odin" is certainly not a bad album, but it could have been much better. You can hear there's potential, but most songs lack something that would make them 'classics' otherwise. Yes, "Treachery" is okay, and the titletrack's also one of my favourites. I think one of the major flaws this album has is the singer. Agreed, he doesn't hit a false note, but his voice is kinda boring to listen to. And he sounds way too one-dimensional. Bummer.
Are the other Elixir-albums worth a listen?
Concerning Voltz ; I listened a lot to this album, but I think it lacks in good songs. No problem with the style they're playing though. This album just doesn't have the 'hits'...

Interesting criteria to consider, adhering to these guidelines now renders almost all my favourite nwobhm LPs as just --bhm LPs!Avenger wrote:Hmm, for some reason I don't remember this thread at all...
I think what needs to be said though is what do you define as the terms for an album to be considered "NWOBHM"?
Year wise, it's '78-'83, however, an album like Slander - Careless Talk Costs Lives sounds like it's right from that era but was released in '91.
An album or band can still be NWOBHM SOUNDING, but in my opinion did not release an actual NWOBHM album unless released within the respected years.

I don't think the movement can be classified so black & white, there must be a grey area post 83 where the tag nwobhm is still valid, for example: So many of the bands from this movement didn't release fullength albums until '84-'86 (outside your defined bracket) but many of these LPs include rerecorded versions of their singles/demos released between 78-83 (inside the bracket)....how does the judge rule in these instances?
some of my favourite nwobhm bands that released fullengths (year irrelevant)
dark heart
dark star
black rose
holocaust
pagan altar
witchfynde
angel witch
vardis
the handsome beasts
diamond head
blitzkrieg
venom
iron maiden
def leppard
savage
raven
Then that's a NWOBHM BAND that's still continuing to release as you put it "BHM" after the movement took place. You have to remember that it's only called "new" because at the time it was fresh. More then 5 years after the initial starting point is no longer "new" anymore. By 1984 the traditional Metal sound had already become quite formulated and not only in the UK but around the globe. I've read a lot of biographies and it's quite often stated when referring to the early days when the Metal genre was being formed that the ground work took place between '78-'83.decibelrebel wrote:Interesting criteria to consider, adhering to these guidelines now renders almost all my favourite nwobhm LPs as just --bhm LPs!Avenger wrote:Hmm, for some reason I don't remember this thread at all...
