Manowar here too. I don't hate them or ridicule them but I never could get into them and it's not for lack of the 'epic taste'.

To contribute something original in this thread, a very large portion of metalheads like Pantera, I find them extremely awful. They're not 80's classics (well, someone will post about 'Power Metal' I just know it), they're totally 90's 'metal', but they're revered wide and far and I just can't stand them.

Something from the eighties... hm... well, the first Liege Lord is considered by many to be amazing, but I think they hit their stride by Master. It's not bad by any means though. A lot of US Power is overrated (at least here in greece )

Also, I guess I'm doing pretty good zen-wise because none of the opinions expressed here got me irritated. Not even the Jag Panzer one.

Just for Helm I'll add all Cirith Ungol apart from their amazing King of the Dead . None of the others are classics in my opinion, good, but not classics.

think I really should make myself more clear about Stained Class. I was 14 or 15 when I got it (and obviously not up to everything that's great ). I was used to the Priest Style of Screaming for Vengeance or Defenders of the Faith at that time, so after some listenings I decided it was plain boring and put it aside - and it took years for me to get over that first impression. Today I consider it a real classic (not the very best Priest Album, for me that would possibly be Sad Wings of Destiny, and, still, Defenders of the Faith.. ). Just put it on yesterday and I can't even complain about the sound.. don't know what I was about back then..

Well my post was partly a joke. I understand quite well that someone could not get into some of 70s Judas Priest albums (even though I think it's their greatest period) at first, but I find it hard to believe that someone would after many listenings still find it bad or boring etc. Now in the other hand it does not take anything from me so I'm not going to jump off a bridge if someone dislikes them.
As for MY favourite JP album.. It has to be sad wings, sin after sin or stained class. Too hard to choose between them.

Oh and I have to agree with Helm about Pantera. I absolutely LOATHE them. I like power metal though but it's no classic and their 90s stuff is annoying "groovy" post-metal.

I don't think there are many Pantera fans here, and Pantera shouldn't be mentioned in a topic about classics(that leave you cold) on this forum.

i think Pantera is that kind of bands/music that are played in (non)metal parties....and thats it for that band........

oh yes, on the obscure 80's front I should mention I didn't really care about Medieval Steel, not that they're bad, they're alright, but I don't think they are good enough to be worshipped. Now Black Stele will come and slit my throat while I sleep

Haha That's amazing. Medieval Steel MPL is one of my favourite US metal releases ever. It has some nostalgic value too because it was one of the first "obscure metal" things I heard. What I really like about it is that it feels like it has great ammounts of feeling and passion that is being locked inside except for some parts when it just flows over like the last chorus in Medieval Steel song.

yeah I dig how he just shoots up an octave for the ending, as I said it's an okay release for me too, but no more

this is an interesting comment since I think they peaked at their first album and by Master I lost interest.

Yeah just goes to show how tastes span. I'm no saying I'm right or anything.
