Running Wild's an awesome band, but they definitely have more than a couple weak releases in their catalog. I think the first two are decent, but really overrated, and Blazon Stone and Masquerade were pretty bad.

Blazon Stone and Masquerade are amazing in my opinion 90's classics.

Mortal Sin. Their new album is best described as "modernized but good".

What about Kreator? "Enemy of God" is awesome. I never really like the band, even back in their 'Coma of Souls' days. Some say they are 'cunning' in the way they followed the trend in the music business (but then many bands are doing likewise). I must admit their last album kicks some serious ass.

I forgot to mention Not Fragile. I haven't heard their newest album, but Time to Wonder is an excellent Gamma Ray style modern power metal album.

Yes the mentioned Not Fragile album is a good one. However I highly recommend their killer "Hard to be Alive" album (for fans of early Helloween). This CD is pretty hard to come by because it was made and released in Japan. Alternatively, you can find their "Lost in a Dream" album which also features similar tracklist. However, if my memory serves, the sound quality on "Lost" is a letdown as compared to "Hard" CD. Oh yes the Japanese made better CD.

I believe Saxon made a good comeback with a modernized sound With Unleash the Beast then Metalhead then Killing Ground and Lion Heart but I think The Inner Sanctum was a step down but still fairly decent,Sinner is another good example in my opinion Bottom Line,Judgement Day,The End of Sanctuary,There Will Be Execution and their newest one Mask Of Sanity.

Lost in a Dream is my favorite album of theirs. I didn't realize there was a difference in sound quality, maybe I'll have to get Hard to Be Alive too.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Lizzy Borden. I hate their new image, but of course it's the music that matters and their newest album rocks.

Are the two best examples I can think of when bands have drastically modernized their sound and still delivered great albums.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Budgie's latest, 2007's "You're All Living In Cookoo Land". They lost their way for me towards the end of the 70's and i was never really into their 80's stuff, but i was pleasantly surprised by this one.
Somehow by modernizing their sound & production, they've recaptured something essential that's been missing in their sound for about 30 years.
It's not as heavy as their early clutch of albums, pardon the pun, but nevertheless excellent intelligent modern rock music from start to finish.
