I got all the Hell stuff on CDR from this website:

Edwin (ex-Pentacle) runs the site & he's great to deal with!

He has tons of incredible stuff so check it all out!

No need to start a new NWOBHM 7" thread when there's a perfectly decent old one...

So have anyone made any "new" discoveries lately? I've been downloading craploads from Bigfootkit's blog this week and discovered plenty of goodies like MOBY DICK, VHF, ENERGY etc.. I need more! Fire away!

I'll be "firing away" on Sunday or Monday with a new post Dan, only one NWOBHM item this time, but i think you'll enjoy it.

Great post nightsblood!

Out of your top 20 there are still a few I haven't heard I.E: Lotus Cruise, Denigh, Sapphire and Weapon (Which I've seen a lot but never went for!). Will have to check out since I have very similar N.W.O.B.H.M. taste.

About the worst 20 I've just bought Horsepower :P so I'll add my opinion sometime soon I read on the new and improved blog that they're actually American though which is interesting. I LOVE that Shiva single "Angel of Mons" is amazing melodic N.W.O.B.H.M. in my opinion I've also got a bit of a thing for the Megaton single although it is unquestionably silly, got to love the conviction of the b-side though so metal with the echo "CAUSE I'M A DIEHARD hard.. hard".

I should do something like your post sometime soon, though it's off to bed now.

I'll stand up also to defend "Angel Of Mons" by Shiva! It's not the heaviest stuff around for sure but I just love it.

Interesting choices all 'round, i don't think i could narrow down my favourites to just a top 20.
I'm surprised the Wikkid Vykkr-black of the night single seems to rated highly by so many of you, the weak vocals always spoiled my enjoyment of it.
Different strokes for different folks eh?
I'm also a fan of Shiva's Angel Of Mons, an underrated and really atmospheric piece.
Bleak House are another interesting band with some outstanding material, and i love the Jersey band Legend.
Demon Pact's Eaten Alive is a cracker too, i love that filthy guitar tone.
It's interesting to me that everyone seems to have a different idea of what the term "NWOBHM" should mean.
At the time here in the UK, "Heavy Metal" was a catch-all phrase that covered everything from Sabbath & Motorhead to UFO & Kiss. There really weren't any names for subgenres of the music, so the subgenres didn't really exist to us, anything with Heavy guitar parts was considered Heavy Metal.
Just look at some of the bands who appeared at the early Donington Monsters Of Rock festivals: Touch, Uriah Heep, Hawkwind, Status Quo, Meatloaf, all playing alongside the likes of Anvil, Rainbow, Riot, Judas Priest and Saxon.
So if some of the material that falls under the NWOBHM umbrella doesn't seem to fit the bill, it's little wonder, as the term itself was a very broad church.
There were attempts later to clarify things slightly around '83, when the likes of Marillion, Pallas, IQ, Pendragon, Tamarisk and the like were grouped together by the press under the unweildy term "NWOBPR" (New Wave Of British Progressive Rock), the bands were too disparate however to be lumped under such a heading.
A few years earlier, rightly or wrongly, they'd have been considered NWOBHM bands.
That was always one of the strengths of the movement to me, there was such variety and individuality amongst the bands.
Also, because the bands more often than not financed their own recordings, circumstances dictated that their strongest material was what was released, whether it was a demo tape or a 45 or ep, the bands were acutely aware that there was a lot of competition, so they had to grab your attention with their best material.
There was no point keeping good songs back "for the album", as the chances were you'd never get to make one, and a lot of the singles were made as mementos for the bands fans, so often they'd contain the most popular songs from the bands live sets, and were intended for sale at gigs.
It was an exciting time for music, unfortunately we seem unlikely to see the likes again.

I agree with those above. Not necessarily all crap, but surely many of zero interest and some, yes, not even nwobhm.

I still can't get into that Requiem 7". I have tried more than 4-5 different times to listen to it, but the songs don't do much to me. It is heavy/doomy metal, however i really can't see what's so overly exciting about it.

Shiva's "Angel of mons" is one my favorite melodic nwobhm tunes, up there with the best of its kind.

I've just noticed a great phenomena I didn't before. I love when people name the single not after the a-side but rather the track they like best on the single.

Keeping to just singles and EP's like nightsblood here's my top

Charger - Desperadoes
Persian Risk - Calling For You
Virtue - We Stand to Fight
Scarab - Poltergeist
Traitors Gate - Devil Takes the High Road
Jameson Raid - The Jameson Raid Story End of Part One
Black Axe - Highway Rider With Red Lights
Tok-io Rose - Bad Girls
Marquis De Sade - Somewhere Up in the Mountains
Satan - Kiss of Death
Cynic - Suicide
Mendes Prey - On the Borderline
Persian Risk - Riding High
Triarchy - Save the Khan
After Dark - Evil Women
Shiva - Angel of Mons
Reincarnate - Take it or Leave it
Iona - Cry For the Innocent
Y Diawled - Noson y Blaidd
Dawnwatcher - Spellbound
Dawnwatcher - Backlash
Hell - Save us From Those who Would Save us
Satanic Rites - Live to Ride

Plus I'm sure there's at least five great ones I'm missing...

Tracks of gold (Singles that have one amazing track but lack for the rest)...

Stagefright - Strangers in the Night
Streetfighter - Crazy Dream

Yes! I love that single too. Did that band ever record any demos?

One i forgot to mention is Fist's "Name Rank & Serial Number"/"You'll Never Get me Up in One Of Those". Not the rarest record by any means, but it meant so much to me as a young rocker, and the songs still stand up brilliantly.
No love here for Fist?

Sure, I dig Fist, but I actually haven't heard that particular single for some strange reason.

I'd love to see a return of the "Gotta Get 'Em All!"-post on the Live & Otherwise blog by the way. :D
