Avenger wrote:The issue isn't just that more copies are being pressed. The issue is that the album was specifically and strongly marketed as being "limited edition". This means that the album was strictly printed in only a small quantity so that it sold out quickly and had a demand that was higher then the amount of units produced. This made the record appeal to collectors and gain value quickly. Now with this "second run" there will be more copies to fill the demand, which basically renders the "limited edition" moniker useless, as it's now become a blatant lie. But whatever makes money right?

Try to separate objective thinking and judging from the bitchy-malicious one.

The bottom line is that the scope of this website/forum is dedicated to collecting and that being the case, my opinion is based from a collector stand point. If I purchased a copy of this the first time around I would be pissed off too. You don't market something as "limited edition" when it's not actually "limited edition".

Personally I don't care about the limited edition business, close to all modern releases are of feigned rarity, but I understand the point of those annoyed by the current example. It shouldn't have been labelled as limited in the first place... then again this makes it a case of the first pressing... and it's not like people don't go crazy over tiny differences in pressings when it comes to 80's releases

Quite probably there will be a few people in the future fighting over the firstest press on eBay while ignoring any other edition.

Well, first pressing is on green and black slabs, and the 2nd is on splatter, so technically those are different products, from collecting standpoint anyway. it is all speculative of course and I still would not call either limited, but to each their own.

stormspell wrote:For me personally a product is limited only if it is hand numbered and/or there is a printed statement on the back cover declaring explicitly it is limited to XXX copies never to be re-pressed. Otherwise people can say anything, but words are wind.

So having said that, this release looks like unlimited to me, and I for one am happy Greg was able to sell and warrant a re-pressing so fast. He surely could have held the last 50 copies of first pressing to sell one at a time on eGay and would have made much more money than investing in second pressing. He did not, instead he is giving chance to more people to have it at regular price. I see nothing wrong with that.
This realese was marketed as limited edition and it comes handnumbered.

What I have to add: I have no problem with Greg besides this shady sort of business he does here. But he's by far not the only one doing this, look at those loads of different limited pressing of the last GHOST LP, any HIGH ROLLER release etc.

Advertisting and selling something as "limited edtion" and repressing it faster than the fucking frequenze of a rabbit is not honest and simply sucks. It will damage the vinyl-collector scene in the long run.

It alread has. i think. The stupid ones are those who support every small label from the start and who buys even different versions of the same album because they thought that that's the correct way of collecting. As soon as the die-hard fans and collecotrs got fed up whit the current policy and figure that for their money they'd rather buy LPs from the 80s again then the underground labels will see how many stauch supporters will remain, good luck with that.

If a flooded market -> decreasing sales -> less releases on vinyl (remember the 90ies when vinyl was already dead?) is what you want: yes thats the good part.
500 sold and people keep asking, so they press more. How will sales decrease?

The chances you can sell with profit are lower, but for that there's other markets.

I strongly encourage this way of doing business. More demand = more copies.
Think a bit out of your box. Of course sales will not decrease for THIS release.

But for the next releases that will be marketed as "limited editions" on Eat Metal, who will still trust they really ARE limited? Why hurry on purchasing something now when I'm certain I can pick it up next month. Or next year. Or in five years. Or, for ppl. that only buy and collect special/rare/limited stuff, never.
So: Sales will go down. People will loose faith in so-called "limited editions" that in fact are unlimited and respressed over and over on demand.

Maybe the next release will be limited to only 50 copies. It will sell even much faster and can be repressed 20 times. Or even better=cheaper: press 1.000 copies at once. And just PRETEND there are only 50. And when these are sold, sell another 50. And so on. Not much different from what is already done here and still defended by some. Its fraud.

This is a collectors place. I speak from collectors point of view. I am the target-group of this sales strategy that is exploited.
If you only care for the music and not the medium it's on: why not just download the music ?
Quickest, cheapest and easiest.

Is it not that the first green vinyl handnumbered edition is the limited one? If Greg put out a run of 525 green vinyls, that would be shady, but what's wrong with pressing 525 of a different colour? The original limited green vinyl ones are the rarer ones now.

@omenofsteel:
1.How many green ones did you buy
2.If he said "I'm making 525 green and black first and when they are gone I'll make another 500 on green/black vinyl",would YOU buy it when it firstly got released?
Not all people release a record for collectors' interest and megalomania, believe it or not.

In this logic there are only two kinds of fans: the ones who actually buy things and collect everything and those who only care about the music and have no need to buy anything. Where do people like me stand who like the music and like to have an original copy without giving a shit about details such as the color of the vinyl?

Maybe the 'limited pressing' announcement was wrong, however it's not the first time this happens and it won't be the last either. I guess some of the collectors might feel kinda exploited with this second run, but then again people who like spending money on obtaining two or three different color versions of an album that contains the same music usually don't have serious financial problems, one more different color version probably won't make much difference to their pockets. This second run gives the chance to more fans to get a copy and enjoy the music which is something positive. It's not as positive to the ones who like to collect everything, but we are not talking about the majority in this case. Most fans will definitely benefit from this second pressing.

I see things never change greg. Your still making empty threats over the internet...

How about actually discussing the topic at hand? You are, after all, the cause of the issue.
