Gotta admit I have never been a huge NWOBHM fan even though I truly enjoy stuff like GRIM REAPER or CHATEAUX ...

Maybe I should pick up some stuff from your top lists and give this genre another try!

Try the selftitled album by Tokyo Blade for starters if you haven't heard it. It should work for you if you like Chateaux.

It's already done and even though I think this record is good I prefer stuff with a more obscure feeling.

BTW, some days ago I had the WITCHFINDER GENERAL First lp in my hands ... I was attracted by the cover. Is this record a good beginning to discover NWOBHM?

Yes. It's more "doomy" and black sabbath-like than nwobhm acts tend to be but it's widely considered as one of the best albums in the scene. Pagan Altar's Volume 1 is another one. It's even more dark and doomy than Witchfinder General and spiced up with lyrics about celtish folklore and paganic rituals. Very atmospheric stuff. The singer has a pretty nasal voice that can put off some people but many adore his uniqueness. Kinda similar thing as with Tim Baker from Cirith Ungol. You either love it or hate it.

That WFG debut is one of my favourites ! There are the best songs of this band on it. the second has only two really good ones for me, the title track and Quietus

I like the debut more too but soviet invasion ep had the best fucking version of R.I.P. It's made of pure awsomeness!

Witchfynde - "Give 'em Hell"
Saxon - from "Wheels..." up to "Power..."
Iron Maiden - everything up to "Seventh..."
Savage - "Loose..."
Holocaust - "The Nightcomers"

And is it me, or does anyone else here thinks that "The Son Of Odin" from Elixir is a bit overrated? I listened to that album 20+ times, but I still can't get into it...

Hmm, for some reason I don't remember this thread at all...

I think what needs to be said though is what do you define as the terms for an album to be considered "NWOBHM"?

Year wise, it's '78-'83, however, an album like Slander - Careless Talk Costs Lives sounds like it's right from that era but was released in '91.

An album or band can still be NWOBHM SOUNDING, but in my opinion did not release an actual NWOBHM album unless released within the respected years.

Well, the NWOBHM was, literally, a wave, a movement, so it really wasn't intended to be identified with a terribly specific heavy metal sound. For this reason I tend to look at it as a time period rather than a sound, even though there were bands even a decade on that could have aesthetically fit the mold. With that said, some of my favorites are:

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Venom - Black Metal
Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Legend - Legend
Pagan Altar - Volume 1
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
White Spirit - White Spirit
Satan - Court in the Act
Witchfynde - Give 'Em Hell
Cloven Hoof - Cloven Hoof
Blitzkrieg - A Time of Changes
Jaguar - Power Games

I also think the Aragorn album that only saw the light of day through that compilation reissue is worth mentioning. It's too bad bands like Trespass and Dragonslayer never managed to record proper albums of their prime material at that time.
