Over 600 records...
This book could release a new credit crunch!

Don't worry, i'm sure many die-hards will actually sit down an read it from the first to the very last page. This should be terrific stuff.

.
This is what I am a little worried about

I keep telling myself that 2 things could happen, Either folks will say "There is just too much" and stop buying 45's as they can't have them all or "I want them all" in which case things could get ugly price wise as most of these are just not available for sale.

When I received Malc's book there were 10-12 things that I didn't know before. I think (and hope) when folks get this USA/Canada 45 book there will be about +100 in a style they like that they have never heard of.

Just out of curiosity I did a few keyword searches on popsike for rare US Metal singles, and some have gone a lot cheaper than expected. It's possible this will change when the book is out, but it might also result in more copies turning up on the market when more fans/collectors/dealers know what to look for and what to ignore.

YES!
This book will be going to a lot of USA Record dealers.

And YES I think there will be a flood in the begining on Ebay of a few things.

What did you think went too cheap?

Do you know this site?

To clarify, I don't know much about rarity ratings on private US 7". I just reacted on the fact that a few titles I've never heard of before went for under the €50 mark - possibly due to the fact that there's no reliable source on the content for bidders to check out at the moment.

I think I've ran across it before. I miss the "advanced search" function that popsike has.

Another subject: will there be info on connections to more well-known bands?

The Amos Milburn 10" listed on collectorfrenzy yesterday is one of my dad's major want list items, though he wants a copy on red vinyl. He had it in the '70s but traded it and has never gotten it back :(

Re: John's book's affect on prices. Hard to say how prices will be affected, but it will vary. Some things will go up b/c people will see 'em for the first time and think the pic sleeve or label looks cool or that the band name/song titles sound interesting. Others will go down b/c they look boring. Given two unknown singles, most folks will gravitate to the one by STEEL RIDERS with the pic sleeve depicting an axe-wielding, motorcycle-riding warrior and bypass the one by BLOWYN HOTT that has a plain label and no sleeve.

Keeping the descriptions to a minimum should help prevent a frenzy from developing around items described as 'brilliant' and crashes from hitting items described as 'awful'. I remember several folks going nuts trying to find the Shock Treatment 7" after reading Malc's description of it. Once they had a chance to hear it, well, I only remember one person actually liking it- everyone else thought Malc was completely wrong about it :)

I do know one thing: d/l requests are gonna go through the roof on forums and blogs everywhere :)

Yes, that's right I don't collect vinyl anymore, however, I agree that huge descriptive write-ups are a waste of good effort. This book is a guide, not a collection of reviews. I've been criticized on a regular basis regarding my own use of internet forums regarding the specifics of items, however, the way I go about using and contributing is different then those that complain. The internet is first and foremost a collection resource for me and second a discussion community. If I'm for example looking for XYZ album, I want to know the label, matrix, etc, specifics so that I know exactly what I am looking for. I could really care less whether or not someone’s opinion on the bass players lack of audibility personally hinders the album for them or not.

I think that's definitely true. I try to keep an eye out for singles that aren't listed as "private US metal" because they do go a lot cheaper. For example, I just bought Lydian - Sky Is On Fire 7" for $2 on eBay. I have no idea how rare it is or what it usually sells for, I just know that $2 for any private metal single is crazy cheap (who cares if the vocals are flat and the B-side is too glammy?)

Anyway, this book is going to be awesome no matter what. I don't think anyone expects it to be "complete". You could have stopped 100 records ago and I think most people would have been quite pleased.

There will be all the info (Songs, Matrix, Year, State...........)
Now that's the porn bit taken care of. Essential info that makes this well worth an investment
glockose wrote:There will be something I call style (Hard Rock,AOR, NWOBHM,Early Metal, Power Metal, Thrash...........................)
Appreciated, though I would really enjoy a short review as well. I realise your opinion would probably vary a lot from mine, but I could still take something from it - reviews are entertaining to me. Even Martin Popoff's reviews are worth a read, though he's totally clueless on some things.

glockose wrote:That is all at this point

As of right now there are over 600 records
YES! I'll never own more than a fraction of those, but the thought of at least knowing about them is great.

glockose wrote:I have come up with a dead line in my head at that time the book will come out. IT WILL NOT BE COMPLET as I am still getting in 1-2 a week that I have never seen before.

This is only a field guide. Not something your going to sit down and read.

I am not a writer and I don't want to be. I just thought I would share some of this info with folks who would want it. If you don't like that layout or approach then do not buy it. Sorry

I am shooting to be done in Feb2010
Can't wait to see this book.

First I have to say I really look forward to this - it will definitely be a must-buy!

About reviewing the stuff or not. There needn't be a thorough examination of the musical qualities (or lack thereoff), but I really think that some sort of descriptional text can be highly useful. Words like doomy, awkward, corny, amateurish, insane, adventureous, punkish, original or carbon-copy (Heck, even heavy!) tells you something, but not neccesarily if it's good or bad.

Just my humble view. You do the work - and probably know what works best for you.

Yes, this is exactly what I was aiming for in my previous post!
