After hearing MORTEM from peru I've been iching to hear more Satanic / Occult / Blackened Death Metal. It can be really sinister stuff! So far I haven't heard much of DM like that so recommendions are welcome. At least I'll check out that Rotting Christ demo.

Strangely, the two Black-Metal masterpieces coming from Norway are two albums that aren't very droning : De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas and A Blaze In The Northern Sky. These two are among the top five BM albums ever released -BATHORY and HELLHAMMER included- and they are more varied than your usual Norwegian stuff.
For Satanic Death-Metal, HADEZ and LEVIFER from Peru too, SADISTIC INTENT, early MORBID ANGEL, THE CHASM, GROTESQUE and some others are first choices, along with NECROS CHRISTOS if you need a newer -but excellent- band... All these bands doesn't sound the same to each other, yet they are all evil and occult in their own way.
To stick to the topic, it seems that there were some good Greek bands in the Death-Metal genre. They weren't evil like MORTEM, yet still occult to the bone, in a more atmospheric way. SEPTIC FLESH up to their first album and CRUCIFIER are fine examples of an original "Greek" sound.

great recommendations Mr Nuke.
there are a lot to discover about greek DM/BM old or new bands ... i find interesting demos from twilight, chained and desperate, death courrier.
Debuts from known bands like rotthing christ/varathron/necromantia/septic flesh are now classics in their own way ...i also really like the 1st Agatus album.
Modern scene is pretty interesting too!

Thanks for all the tips! I already know Hadez and Sadistic Intent and like them. What early Morbid Angel stuff do you mean? Demos only or does their debut album count too? I love Altars Of Madness and it's one of my favourite DM albums. Pretty evil sounding too but not in the blackened way as MORTEM imo.For Satanic Death-Metal, HADEZ and LEVIFER from Peru too, SADISTIC INTENT, early MORBID ANGEL, THE CHASM, GROTESQUE and some others are first choices, along with NECROS CHRISTOS if you need a newer -but excellent- band... Don't forget Goat Semen. One for the I.N.R.I. appreciators, definitely.Mr Nuke wrote:HADEZ and LEVIFER from Peru too
I second this. Another good deathly BM artist is Unholy Crucifix.NECROS CHRISTOS if you need a newer -but excellent- band...

It is certainly up there with the best. "Transform All Sufferings into Plagues" is one of my favourite songs from that albumION BRITTON wrote:My heart lies with "Thy Mighty Contract". The BEST BM album of all time for me.
The last RC album "Theogonia" was also good to these ears.
Some other Greek BM/Dark Death Metal stuff I have
Lemegethon - Demonic Hellhounds 7"
Thou Art Lord - split 7" with Ancient Rites
Nordor - His Ficticious Grandeur Demo 93
Zephyrous - Entrance and Wandering on the seven Zones 1994 Demo

You mean the thrash band? Disagree all the way. One of those countless bands that are trying to revive 80s thrash metal sound plus a mediocre and unconvincing vocalist. Perhaps the older stuff was slightly better, but again nothing exceptional. They give nice shows tho!Mr Nuke wrote:and CRUCIFIER are fine examples of an original "Greek" sound.
Check out DEAD CITY if you have the chance. A cool mixture of Coroner and Skyclad, highly recommended for the fans of the Swiss gods.

Old greek esxtreme metal... Hmm... Who else than old Varathron (more death metal oriented like Rotting christ on the demo period, then more black on the first album "His Majesty At The Swamp")? and old Thou Art Lord "Eosforos" era?
I'm also recalling of some Death Metal, the raw way, Dead Christ, i think they only released a 7", correct me if I'm wrong.
