Unorthodox is a fine album, despite featuring the line "I can feel the smell... of Hell!"

I'm searching for Death Metal in vein of Possessed - Seven Churches. It can be a little more "death metal" though.. as I know possessed is considered thrash metal by some. Haunting keyboard intros etc. are very welcome but I'm NOT looking stuff like "The Key". I wan't something less calculated but more demonic and atmospheric.

If there is DM similar to what I described, could anyone drop some names.

Some favorites of mine are:

Morbid Angel of course, from A to D. I bought Covenant tape when I was about thirteen, damn I love that album! Blessed Are The Sick also, nobody makes death metal like that and of course Altars Of Madness... I'm very happy to see them finally live next summer in Helsinki.
I listened quite alot Cannibal Corpse also in the days, only Barnes era though. Their first gig in Helsinki back in 97? is a great memory for me.
Amorphis of course, Karelian Isthmus and Tales From The Thousand Lakes! I remember day when Elegy was released, had it in plastic bag with beers when running away from cops... :D Oh those teenage years!
Of course the pioneers, Possessed, Death, Repulsion, Master/Deathstrike...

Never been huge fan of Stockholm sound, Entombed has some moments, first Grave is very good but Dismember was never my cup of tea.
Treblinka rules!

Then Carcass (first three, don't know do I want to see their reunion this summer?) and mighty BOLT THROWER! As the cliche says, like a tank rolling over you! But that's what they are at their best.
First Nocturnus LP is also godly, I don't how to describe it... Crazy, death scifi!
Autopsy! Nobody can beat Reifert in death metal drumming! Mental Funeral is the album.
First two by Obituary, there's enough reek of something dead in them. Cause Of Dead maybe my favorite from them.

And from the last few posts, Mortem! Great, great, great! Their gig in Helsinki few years ago was a killer. The Devil Speaks In Tongues and Decomposed By Possession are killer albums! DEATH RULES SUPREME!

And I this posts is missing too much stuff. But these came to mind.

I've really been enjoying Kruger's second album for the past weeks. Great death/thrash and a cool speed metal song in the middle to boot.

Today I sat down with their first release, Embryo, for the first time and I can only say: what the hell was that? Sure, Born from Darkness is a pretty wild release but this is madness on a different level. Songs about Harley Davidson and "Flying Dutch Man", catchy guitar leads coming out of left field and then disappearing abruptly and a total mess of early death, thrash, speed and just normal heavy metal. Definitely not 100 % death metal, but 100 % awesome! Even the weak guitar sound is pretty enjoyable.

Well, I'm a HUGE fan of old school Death Metal, but you already mentioned almost all my favorites, so I guess there's no point in repeating those, just gonna name a few I don't think I saw.
Pungent Stench - all records before the first split-up.
Impetigo - All
Terminal Death - Faces Of Death demo
Master - The older stuff (mainly the unreleased 85 album)

Newer bands that capture that old atmosphere (in my opinion) are:
Machetazo
Abscess
Coprofagi (a new band that has just released their first demo, but I think is great! check them out at http://myspace.com/coprofagi )
Graveyard (same as above, but I liked Coprofagi a bit more, http://myspace.com/graveyardofdoom )

With my band we try to do that old style of Death Metal, but is up to you to judge if we achieved it http://myspace.com/pedometal
(in my signature there's a link to download the whole demo)
