"If it's too loud, you're too..."Lama wrote:I never got into the early stuff of the Swiss MESSIAH, demos up to "Extreme Cold Weather". I bought "Hymn To Abramelin" twice (with some years in between), and even the second time It didn't do anything with me. I like "Psychomorphia" and "Choir Of Horrors" though.

To me it is the complete contrary.
I don't care about everything after "Extreme cold weather", because the first 2 records are just outstanding in the European mid-80s metal scene.
Yes, for that time they were something special, I'm not denying that. But somehow I just can't enjoy the songs...Nasty Uwe wrote:"If it's too loud, you're too..."Lama wrote:I never got into the early stuff of the Swiss MESSIAH, demos up to "Extreme Cold Weather". And I also must say that the music they played on their later albums was way more 'normal' and 'accessible', but I like the songs more.

First two Bathory's - they are pure junk to my years. I love everything afterward though.

I'm finding myself eating my words on these two bands. I wasn't listening to the right albums. "Into Glory Ride" is awesome. The vocals on Battleroar's "Age of Chaos" bothered me, but "To Death and Beyond" is amazing and now "Age of Chaos" is growing on me.reindeerattack666 wrote: Battleroar - vocals are too operatic. Manowar -- Musically, these guys aren't anything impressive, and are more of a parody of epic metal than epic metal proper.

Argh MANOWAR are just gods of course hehe
Into Glory Ride, Hail To England, Sign of The Hammer => all 20/20
The debut album and Kings of Metal are very cool too.

I've judged bands after hearing the "wrong" records a lot of times, but admitting to yourself that you've been wrong is a great quality to have reindeerattack666.MEXDefenderOfSteel wrote:prejudging is bad, everyone knows it,now get your Hail to England fixreindeerattack666 wrote:I'm finding myself eating my words on these two bands. Hm, about that user name: have you ever been around these parts? We have traffic signs warning of reindeer in the road several places outside town

I know I ain't doing much,
doing nothing means a lot to me.

Funnily enough you've listed exactly the five Mano-albums i have in my collection, and in my order of preference too!J.K. wrote:Argh MANOWAR are just gods of course hehe

The only problem i have with "Kings Of Metal" is the song "Carry On", i always hated that cheesey singalonga Eurovision sounding piece of shit.
I've been giving the new re-recorded version of the "Battle Hymns" album a good listen and it sounds good but a little redundant.
It's not like they've radically rearranged the songs or anything, just recorded with modern technology and added little keyboard washes here and there.
A puzzling move.
However i fail to see why you can't get down with Down, to me they're one of the few bands out there just now who are capable of blending the older '70's Heavy Metal style with modern recording techniques whilst retaining their identity.
They also consistently come up with truly memorable riffs and haunting/unusual melodies.
"II" is my personal favourite from their output, (although i'm probably in the minority there), just a really inspired and varied album that reveals more with every listen.
Give them another try and let "the power of the riff compell you".
I cannot, I shall not, I will not obey.
