This is a very interesting thread, I'll add some bands, they're not something outstanding, but I don't consider'em bad, they have some good songs that I listen constantly:
Titan - Only their heavy metal demos, (the technical thrash attempts ain't really good).
Hardware - Great EP

The problem with the german Metal scene is simply mainly the crap bands released vinyls while the killer bands remained in the demo stage, unheard, undiscovered, unwanted. And to find these demos (and may it be only dubs) is almost impossible. Furthermore when you listen to some of these obscure bands from all genres you start asking why the well known labels signed these bands (Gama stuff) but ignored the outstanding ones instead. Though the Gama and Metal Enterprises catalogue features a hell of local acts that are interesting to listen to but unfortunately exactly these bands with their shitty vocalists stand for the term German Metal. Sad but true ...
Prohably their demos had been better than the final albums? Listen to Saint's Anger demo for example and then compare to the LP (which is cool). The demo is way more aggressive!

There's always a pro and a contra but talking about a german scene and only mention the "5" LP's that were made (compared to the hundreds of better demos) is simply ridiculous imo.

This post does absolutely hit my taste of Heavy Metal, since I've been worshipping both bands for some years now.

But can someone enlight me about Poseidon, the music itself sounds listenable (nothing over the top) but what's the story with the drums? Sounds like a drum computer to my ears though there's a drummer mentioned on the back cover?????

I'm not sure about that but just because a name for the "drummer" is listed doesn't mean that the recording on the album is an actual person. If I recall correctly, Running Wild had some accusations surrounding their "drummer" in early 2000. It became some sort of a running gag where other bands were crediting their drums under the same name.
Either way, I haven’t listened to any Poseidon material in ages, so perhaps I should revisit it and make my own decision.

Same with Varathron's debut album. "Wolfen" the "drummer" sounded very computerish ...

A lot of early 90s Greek black metal releases had that problem.

Well, a few days ago I read the entire topic and downloaded (shame on me) some recommendations.
So far I've listened to Metal Sword, Abraxas and Battlefield. Metal Sword was OK, nothing special, guess I'll listen them again later. The Battlefield EP is great, although there's one riff that's IDENTICAL to an (early) Slayer one. Abraxas is great too, how about their other albums?, are those any good?

You should try the Arrakis Demo 1988. It contains prohably the best German Metal that was ever recorded!
Also just recently bought the Megace - "Sign of the ape" demo and it's just fucking awesome Speed/Thrash. Their debut has nothing in common with their 80's demos. It's a shame!

Good but different good,more modern and a tad worse than the debut imo.
