What I'm wondering is: did Daniel open this thread expecting to find sensible debate on this subject? Did you really Daniel?

I could expect people would in some way act as if they'd read any of the previous comments and points brought up instead of seeming like they just randomly come in and parrot the same old WASP is boring etc. crap.

In my opinion WASP play real Metal (!!!) although the only concert I've seen (in 2006) s*cked a lot.
1 hour playing time, stupid security, much more stupid fans (I remember those two "ladies" being pissed off of my Air-guitar-playing) and so on...
The setlist was okay, but Blackie seemed to be bored of all that Tour/concert circuit.
A quite conflicting situation.
However, I like their early records and would ever call them METAL!!!

W.A.S.P. are metal no doubt, true or not it doesn't matter. In 80s, I think they were kind of crossing point between the glam and regular metal scene. Not enough sweet for glam, but not enough heavy and real to be true.
Anyway, I see 'em as no essential band at all. 20 years ago, when I started getting into HM, I already had bunch of Iron Maidens, Saxons, Accepts, Judas Priests, Motorheads, Scorpionses, Venoms, Black Sabbaths, Manowars etc. on vinyls or tapes, but none of WASP to this day. I knew their hits, but I just didn't cared about 'em. I started listening to them just recently, because I was forced to... it's one of my wife's favourite bands.

How is Motörhead a metal BAND? As much as I like Scorpions they weren't exactky heavy either were they... (just to keep the argument going

)

Some Scorpions tracks from the 70s were way ahead of their time, maybe not as metallic as Sad wings of destiny, but still very powerful.
Pictured life
Dark lady
In trance
Top of the bill
Virgin killer
We'll burn the sky
He's a woman she's a man
Sails of charon
...
Personally, I have no objection if someone calls Virgin Killer, In Trance and Taken by force heavy metal.

Well, if MOTORHEAD and old SCORPIONS aren't heavy metal (?!), then I suppose we need to exclude TYGERS OF PAN TANG, early SAXON, BASHFUL ALLEY, PERSIAN RISK and countless other, mainly NWOBHM bands from that list too?

Well there's a line between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal....

I've made no bad remarks about Scorpions, I was simply saying when people are going on about WASP being too soft it sounds stupid compared to the bands they are listing as "legit"... Saxon have never been very HEAVY either so all these points have no validation in facts.

At least for me, Wheels Of Steel LP is one of the heaviest records ever.
I've tried actually to point out at diversity in heavy metal. I usually recognize two main styles: first is ordinary and street themed bands which is usually more straight-forward with music (like Motorhead, old Saxon, Tygers Of Pan Tang, classic Scorpions, Bashful Alley, Accept etc.) and the other one which is more epic/mystery/occult/dark themed and more theatrical with music (as Mercyful Fate, Venom, Iron Maiden, Cloven Hoof, Candlemass etc.)
