Sharing Rare Records
"I am NOT a collector"
Ok all kidding aside. Let's get this straight
I am a record dealer.
Yes I am in it to make money.
When I started (22 years ago) I said I wanted to be the NICE dealer, and I think I have been. the costumer is always right. Don't like something you bought send it back no question, Always me deals, Make sure you get what you pay for. Even sent FREE Holiday gifts for years (T-shirts, Hats, Bottle Openers.....100-200 every year) All I thought was good.
BUT NOW in the day of Ebay,Blogs, MP3's File sharing..........
Yes I have things that are rare and are not out on the Web.
Yes I have the time and ability to put them on the web, But choose not to.
So folks hear call me a "Selfish Asshole"
Yes for the past 3 years I gave records to members of this board for FREE at the Holidays. This year I did not do it. WHY well in the past folks just pissed me off. I would send them records for FREE all on my dime (NOT CHEAP) since postage is $5-$7 each and I would be sending 20 records each year. PLUS the cost of the record.
Every year I would receive PM's from folks like:
"This record is a piece of Shit, can you send me another one" This was in reply to the first 220Volts 45, Reissue on Clear vinyl.
"I don't like NWOBHM, Send me some Death NOW, you said you would send me a record and this is F*ckin Crap" This was in reply to the Burner 45.
"I wanted the JJ Powerhouse 45 not this shit Dizzit Thanks but no thanks"
Then I posted a radio show on DJ Shadow Radio and came hear to tell folks. Now I see someone downloaded it and burned CDR of it...... Thanks
Now why should I be nice?

Words fail me...
Yep, this is a fact in the days of the Internet. As soon as people can get something for free, they somehow start to expect to get everything for free. Not knowing how hard it was even to get to listen to rare music before the Internet, let alone own the physical product.
And complaining about something you got for free is about as low as you can get.
And about mp3s and such, I too have decided to stop posting full clips because of bootlegs being made of my previous rips. I try not to let it get to me though, but also made sure it won't happen again. I like to think file sharing is inherently a good thing if used correctly. It helps creating, or maintaining, demand for a rare release, and possibly even create interest enough for a reissue to be made. In this case it also helps the band. Problem is, too many people misuse the "gift" of file sharing for it to be worthwhile. Sad but true.

Well, I can understand that. There are ungrateful motherfuckers everywhere but you can't let them decide what you do or don't. I'm not saying that you should get back to give away free records. That was a great thing you did and honestly I don't think I would give away records to unknown people just like you used to do. See, the reasons you gave were totally different to those Rockadelic gave. You had bad experiences and you might be a bit bitter about them, which I find totally reasonable, although I think let the few idiots get through you instead of all the rest who really appreciate what you do is not the best way and I hope you can overcome that.
I agree that you have to be a total piece of shit to complain about a free record that someone sent you but there's always gonna be people complaining, even at free stuff. Luckily I think they're not too many here in The Corroseum.
Now, filesharing doesn't cost you any big bucks and you get to keep the records. Sure, you'll have people complaining about something too but as I said, instead of focusing on that few idiots you should only care about those who really appreciate what you do and I think that's most users around here. At least all of the older and more active ones.
I don't think there aren't any mp3 collectors or cheap bastards on this board. If somebody asks for a rip to check something out it's probably for a good reason (limited amount of copies/high cost) and he's a fellow collector, not somebody who's looking for links to repost in his personal blog or whatever. I can see that sort of anti-mp3 collectors comments in boards like metal archives or something like that, but I find that rather insulting here at The Corroseum.
So to make things clear, I don't think you're an asshole. The reasons you stated are different to those stated by Rockadelic and were stated in a different manner, at least you elaborated more than "things aren't for free, I am not Santa Claus. Would you share your girlfriend with me?" and all those stupid "arguments". However, if you know someone here wants to check out an album and you could easily share some mp3s with him and don't do it just out of spite for other people who are ungrateful bastards then you're letting yourself get carried by those assholes and might eventually become like them yourself. I used to be like that too but now I don't give a damn. Just because other people are a piece of shit it doesn't mean I should become one as well.

Completely agree...another example for my imaginary bus ticket story. Complaining about something that you got for free is the worst attitude ever. But internet is a faceless virtually world. The other story is what Khnud said above. You rip anything special and a few months later someone bootlegged it. Just wondering when the first Thynn Ice bootleg will appear but it's obviously then that it was taken from vxn123's rip since the last track cut's öff. But it won't stop, just wait for the coming Randy CD with their demo. A rip appears in the net and wush...a CD too...glockose wrote: Every year I would receive PM's from folks like:

Words fail me...
And to make things a little clearer for the young folks here.
I have the SAME feelings as Rockadelic maybe just a differant way of saying them.
He is my borther, and the reason I'm into records to start with. Everything I do/Have done I have learnt from him. He's given away a lot more records and music then I ever have. So please do a little reserch before bashing folks you don't know. Thanks

If someone wants to share a unheard metal record, it might be crap it might be killer, that is awesome. I would be glad. But if they don't want to, it's their choice and there's nothing you could do about it. Respect that.
And I can't believe someone complaint about having a free record .. Send the record back or give it to someone who enjoy it and shut the fuck up instead of complaining when you get a record for FREE.

Need to get one more thing straight...just because you or Rockadelic or whoever else have been trading rare records for so many years it doesn't mean that we should respect you or hold you in the highest esteem no matter what...not talking about what's been said in this particular thread, jsut generally speaking because I get that sort of feeling with some of the answers here... You may have been around since the dawn of time or you may know or have heard thousands of unknown records but that fact alone doesn't make you automatically right in each and every case or the ultimate authorities in whatever concerns heavy metal...again I'm not talking about what's been written here, it's just that I often come across this kind of attitude, especially from older metallers - 'I've been listening to metal since 1983 - You who started in 1993 don't know shit about metal', as if the validity of someone's opinion is based solely on his # of years of involvement with something. Yes, maybe we should hear more closely to what you older ones have to say, however that doesn't mean you're always right or you speak the truth and anything else shouldn't be taken into consideration.

Somehow the whole thread made me think of an analogy:
imagine a society where everyone has enough food for them to be full, even to have a surplus of food in their cupboards and fridges. Some of the people in this society like to sample strange, rare and exotic foods that they buy from the "strange, rare and exotic food dealers". One day, a person whose belly is full and whose shelves groan under the weight of food becomes upset. Some other person has been eating some food that is unknown to him. This food happens to be very rare and expensive and he can't afford or obtain it. So he will never know the taste unless the other person shares it with him. But he is full, he ought to be happy with what he has. And the other guy should be allowed to enjoy his rare, exotic and strange food in any way he pleases.
Yeah, we're aware of that and try to delete their accounts.MEXDefenderOfSteel wrote:except for the ones raising their posts to 50 ,of course there are some among us, i find it sadCochino wrote:

About the last analogy, it's not quite valid. If you give the food to me and I eat it, you won't have the food whether you need it or not, therefore I'd be taking something from you. Sharing music doesn't take anything from you, you still have the record, and anyone interested gets to check it out. I see it as a win/win situation, I don't see any harm being done to he who owns the actual album. So, sure I don't need to listen to everything that's out there but how come it's ok to say that people ask for an audio sample (and keep in mind that nobody's demanding, but just asking) are whiners but it's not ok at all call selfish to those who can share without any harm being done to them nor their item or collection and decide not to do so just because they don't feel like it? As I said many times, they have all the right to do so but that doesn't make them less selfish.
I totally agree with what Ion Britton just said. So anybody asking for a rip should just accept all the insulting comments from those collectors but if you insult them back it's just not cool and we should just accept what they say without saying anything?
Oh, and Glockose, I knew those comments were from members of this board since it's here where you gave those records away for free. What I mean is that just because of that few comments you get pissed off at the rest of us who appreciate what you did? Tell those guys to go fuck themselves and don't deal with them anymore, why also let them ruin your experiences with the rest of the members here? If you get pissed off at me because of this argument, ok. But getting pissed off at every other member just because something I said would be silly as well.

Still, those bad comments might just as well have been sent by other people not mentioned in that thread. I think it's an awesome gesture giving away all those rare records (several of them is on my want list), and to think some people reacted like that, I just can't believe it.
