It seems some people are looking for epic non-metal music and I would like to recommend swedish prog/jazz artist Bo Hansson. Maybe not epic in the same way as the epic-metal scene is but it's quite mindblowing. Check out the Lord of the Rings record for example.

Legend (USA) - The Destroyer (1979) could be one of the first created.

But in my opinion, Medieval Steel, Manilla Road and Omen released most of the best epic metal songs in history. I shouldn't forget, maybe because of my last meetings with them, to Sacred Steel and Holy Martyr, which are playing great epic songs in their respective styles.

Greetings

I think the first songs that spring to mind, the ones I involuntarily starts humming when in an epic mood would be:

Y DIAWLED - Noson Y Blaidd - a fucking MAJESTIC piece of proud, swordclashing METAL and one of the best pieces of music ever written.
MANOWAR - Bridge Of Death - the #1 "classic" in this field. Manowar's best song ever?
MASTER'S HAMMER - Já nechci mnoho trápiti již pánové váš sluch - words can never describe the genious of that opening riff, verse, brigde and chorus. Pure Epic Metal Glory!
SKYCLAD - Womb Of The Worm - kind of a joker, but this is simply a masterpiece and really fucking intense and epic.
LEGEND (US) - The Golden Bell - no comments needed
I agree with you in Noson Y Blaidd (nice female vocals) and also in The Golden Bell although, as said above, I prefer The Destroyer.

Medieval Steel-Medieval Steel
Howl in the Sky is a great song but the rest of the album is not so good.

I love Medieval Steel and Necropolis too!

I don't know if it is mentioned before, but Wyxmer Mystikal Wyvern should be in the list of best epic/lyrical songs!

I only know for sure what is the LEAST epic song of all time: Napalm Death "You suffer".

A worthy contender that is, but I'd rather go for "Dead Pt. 1" :)

It's an obvious one but I didn't notice it mentioned. FATES WARNING - The Apparition, one of the most glorious epic masterpieces I expect I'll ever hear, not in length perhaps but certainly in songwriting and message.

Another no-brainer would be Beyond the Realms of Death. Timeless majesty!
